HIGH SCHOOL

Rogers inducts 6 into hall of fame

Six former Rogers High School players and one former coach will be inducted Sept. 27 into the Rogers High Mountaineer Athletic Hall of Fame.

This year’s class includes former Rogers baseball coach Tom Woodruff, Dickie West (football/track), Mindy Wishon Brown (basketball/volleyball/track), Rogers Heritage Coach Tom Olsen (basketball), Rogers businessman Gary Jackson (distinguished service), Charlie Johnston (football/track) and Alan Davidson (football/track).

The inductees will be recognized at the Mounties football game against Springdale Har-Ber on Sept. 26 and honored at a reception at 6 p.m. Sept. 27 at the high school.

FISHING

Hite leads Angler of the Year Championship

Brett Hite of Phoenix leads the Bassmaster Angler of the Year Championship at Bays de Noc in Escanaba, Mich after Thursday’s first round.

Hite weighed five fish for 24 pounds, 6 ounces and holds a 4-ounce lead over Brandon Lester of Fayetteville, Tenn.

Jacob Powroznik of Port Haywood, Va. (24-1), Dean Rojas of Lake Havasu, Ariz., (22-0) and Skeet Reese of Auburn, Calif., (21-11) round out the top five.

Mark Davis of Mount Ida is 12th with 20-4. Mike McClelland of Bella Vista of Bella Vista is 32nd with 15-11. Kevin Short of Mayflower is 34th at 15-6, while Scott Rook of Little Rock is 44th with 12-15.

VOLLEYBALL

UA-Fort Smith wins home opener

Arkansas-Fort Smith defeated Lubbock Christian 25-11, 19-25, 25-12, 25-15 Thursday night at the Stubblefield Center.

Katarina Krstonosic and Payton Hamilton led the Lady Lions (10-3, 4-0 Heartland Conference) with 10 kills. Bailey Katzfey had 37 assists while Jessica Anderson had 5 bocks and Emily Tripp had 30 digs.

Maddie Johnson led Lubbock Christian with 10 kills and Erin Fisher had 29 assists.
