Speakeasy to support service

A Night at the Speakeasy on Oct. 17 promises to be a profitable outing for the Junior Auxiliary of Rogers-Bentonville. The third annual Roaring '20s-themed benefit will mark the volunteer organization's 45th, or sapphire, anniversary in Benton County and help support nearly one dozen service projects.

The service organization's work in the community includes supporting the needs of the Boys and Girls Club of Benton County, a monthly dinner with Havenwood residents, tutoring elementary students in math and reading, snackpacks for school children and helping children in Head Start celebrate birthdays.

Through their partnership with Reading is Fundamental (RIF), the nonprofit organization selects, purchases and distributes books to second-grade students in Benton County three times each year.

Rebecca Kendall, auxiliary first vice president, said the group has added three new projects for 2014-15 -- a life skills mentoring program at Northwest Arkansas Children's Shelter, Literacy Night at Teenie Russell Primary School and a Parents Night Out program for parents of special needs children in conjunction with Polina's Promise and Grace Point Church.

"We are very excited about our continuing growth and expansion of our projects but need to continue strengthening our fundraising efforts to support this growth," Kendall said.

Benefit guests are encouraged to dress for the decade, and the evening will include heavy hors d'oeuvres, dessert, beer, wine, a signature cocktail, live music and silent auction.
