Guthrie gains

Eagle rank

Jeremy Guthrie, 17, of Prairie Grove is a new Eagle Scout. Guthrie, the son of Steve and Janet Guthrie, is a member of Troop 846.

For his Eagle Scout project, Guthrie cleared overgrown brush from the entrance and fence lines at Mountain View Cemetery in Lincoln. The brush had encroached on the entrance and covered several grave markers.

The project included help from more than 30 volunteers. Guthrie earned more than 21 merit badges.

He is currently attending Brigham Young University-Idaho and will hold his Eagle Court of Honor after returning home on winter break.

Baledges named

Hispanic scholars

Fayetteville High School seniors Barrett and Brooke Baledge have been named 2014 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars by The College Board.

Each year, the program honors about 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from among more than 250,000 Hispanic or Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT. Winners must be of at least one-quarter Hispanic or Latino descent, achieve a minimum cutoff score and have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.

'Heroes' grant

Voya Financial Inc. has announced that Melissa Miller and Willie Williams, both teachers at Randall G. Lynch Middle School in Farmington, have received a $2,000 grant as part of its Unsung Heroes awards competition.

The program honors K-12 teachers nationwide for their innovative teaching methods, creative educational projects and ability to positively influence children. Miller and Williams were selected for their innovative teaching idea, Engaging Students with CPS (Current Population Survey), a program focused on implementing a computer response system in science and social studies classes.

The system is used to create informal student polls and daily assessments and to help teachers target the needs of students as they arise.

Voya Financial is currently accepting applications for its current Unsung Heroes awards cycle through April 30.

Lester competes

in youth rodeo

Baylee Lester, a seventh-grader at Fulbright Junior High School in Bentonville, will compete in the American Royal Invitational Rodeo at Hale Arena in Kansas City, Mo.

Lester qualified to compete in the junior breakaway roping, goat tying and barrel racing events. The event features both junior and senior divisions and has given away more than $68,500 in scholarships since 2007.

Rumsey attends

Camp KAOS

Logan Rumsey of Rogers attended the Camp KAOS Space 201 program July 6-11 at the Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kan. Rumsey, the son of Bill and Shannon Rumsey, is an eighth-grader at Lingle Middle School in Rogers this fall.

Space 201 is a six-day astronaut training camp for students entering at least the eighth grade. The camp emphasizes teamwork, leadership and problem solving.

Freshmen win

Ten University of Arkansas freshmen who are planning to major in elementary education, including five from Northwest Arkansas, have received the James Patterson Education Scholarship, founded last year by the best-selling author.

Local winners are Audrey Edwards, a graduate of Prairie Grove High School; Kaylee Hamilton, a graduate of Rogers Heritage High School; Arllyn Hernandez, a graduate of Rogers Heritage High School; Allison Overdorf, a graduate of Greenland High School; and Makayla Terry, a graduate of Prairie Grove High School.

Each winner will receive a $6,000 award. This marks the second year for the scholarships to be awarded.

UA names

top staffers

The University of Arkansas Staff Senate has announced the UA Employees of the Year for 2013-14. Employees of the Year are chosen for going above and beyond their normal job duties and are selected from winners of the Employees of the Quarter for the year.

Rodger Hunter, student-athlete development coordinator for the Office of Student-Athlete Success, and Robert Ainley, assistant director of the Veterans Resource and Information Center, were chosen in the professional/non-faculty academic category.

Brenda Foster, an administrative assistant in the department of history, was honored in the secretarial/clerical category. Michael Zachary, a computer support technician for the UA Honors College, won in the paraprofessional/technical category, while Larry West, a journeyman carpenter, won in the skilled crafts/service/maintenance category.

Each winner received a certificate and monetary award during a ceremony Sept. 11. In addition, they will serve on the selection committee for the 2014-2015 Employees of the Quarter and Year.

Brasher, Pair

cited for work

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith Staff Council has presented the Lucille Speakman Excellence Awards to Krystal Brasher of Alma and Jamie Pair of Fort Smith.

Brasher is the accounts payable manager in the university's finance department. She was honored for her role in helping the university move from a two-year college to a regional university.

She began as a student worker in 1992.

Pair is the assistant director of the Western Arkansas Technical Center. She was honored for her work at the center which includes participating in all commencement exercises, acting as contact for the Partners in Education program, sitting as chair-elect for the Staff Council and participating in the United Way Day of Sharing.

She began working at the center in 2006.

Both were honored in the non-teaching category of the awards, named for a long-time UA Fort Smith teacher, administrator and board member. Each will receive a $1,000 award and a $2,000 departmental award for equipment, software and professional development.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards are searching for Arkansas' top youth volunteers for 2015. Students in grades 5-12 are invited to apply for the awards if they have made contributions to their communities through volunteer service in the last 12 months.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 4.

Hammond

top reviewer

Rhonda Hammond, an assistant professor of hospitality management at the University of Arkansas, received the Outstanding Scientific Paper Reviewer Award at the International Council on Hotel Restaurant and Institutional Education conference recently.

Hammond was recognized in the food service category for reviewing papers by other researchers and providing an expert opinion on whether or not the papers would be accepted for publication and presentation. She also provides suggestions for improvements.
