Walmart grocery store planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.

FAYETTEVILLE — A Walmart grocery store and fueling station is planned on the north side of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, between Hill and Government avenues.

According to a Sept. 2 letter from Stephen Giles, a Little Rock attorney representing property owners Thad and Burt Hanna, the Hannas are under contract to sell their land to Walmart.

“A grocery store at this location will conveniently serve the large number of area residents, many of whom live in University of Arkansas student housing and rental homes,” Giles said in the letter, addressed to Jeremy Pate, Fayetteville Development Services director.

A Farmers Insurance agency, auto repair shop and several industrial buildings are located on the approximately 6-acre property.

According to the company’s website, Walmart has two Neighborhood Market stores in Fayetteville: off of Wedington Drive and near Mission Boulevard and Crossover Road. Two Supercenters are located at 2875 W. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and 3919 N. Mall Ave. And a Walmart Express is one of several storefronts in the Garland Avenue Garage, across the street from university dorms.

It is unclear which store format is planned for the Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard location.

Members of the Fayetteville Planning Commission’s Subdivision Committee are scheduled to review a rezoning request for the new proposed Walmart site Oct. 2.
