CHAMPAGNE RECEPTION

New lighting system shines on opening night festivities

The cast and crew of Memphis The Musical joined theatergoers in the Arkansas Repertory Theatre lobby for a champagne toast Sept. 5 in honor of the musical's opening night.

Bob Hupp, The Rep's producing artistic director, toasted the theater's "incredible staff" and the show's "amazing cast." He also toasted the creative team, which included musical director Mark Binns and director and choreographer Lynn Kurdziel-Formato.

Hupp also asked partygoers to take notice of the newly lighted building that houses the theater. The lighting, he said, was donated by Entergy in honor of the theater's former board member Steve Strickland. Strickland retired in May from Entergy after 35 years with the company. The lights are the same kind of LEDs used on three downtown bridges that cross the Arkansas River.

The production, the first of the theater's season, runs through Sept. 28.
