Construction Requires Lane Shifts On Interstate 49 In Fayetteville

FAYETTEVILLE -- Motorists on Interstate 49 should be aware of new lane shifts beginning this week, according to a news release Wednesday from the state Highway Department.

Northbound traffic is restricted to one lane between the Wedington Drive and Porter Road interchanges to allow the contractor to shift northbound traffic to temporary lanes.

Southbound traffic will be restricted to one lane in the same area from 8 p.m. to midnight tonight to allow the contractor to shift southbound traffic to original northbound lanes.

The lane shifts are expected to remain in place for two months while a drainage structure under the interstate is replaced. A concrete barrier wall will separate single lanes in each direction.

In July 2013, the Arkansas Highway Commission awarded a $16.6 million contract to Pace Construction of St. Louis to add a third lane in each direction on I-49 between Arkansas 16 and Porter Road.
