A Little Help From Neighbors

A recent letter from a Bella Vista resident was simply spot on. Property values, unless on a golf course or lake, are much less per square foot than major cities in Northwest Arkansas and, yes, the POA dues, in my opinion, are excessive and cater to a select group who play golf (do not forget the better-than-half-price camping offered to member lot owners, etc.).

Having said that, I have no problem allowing the POA members to subsidize my recreational activities. Let's pass the increase.

It's All In The Tweets

Tweets imagined by a liberal-minded Arkansas-American:

From Oklahomans to Arkansans voting for next governor. #(hashtag)Early childhood education funded by Oklahoma since 1998. "Greatest thing since fly-swatters."

From Right-wing Arkansas legislators to Arkansas. #Obamacareprivateoption. "Wow, what a difference the right lipstick makes!"

From newly insured Arkansans and Americans to President Obama, Democrats and America. #Obamacare. "Thanks."

From Republicans in Congress to each other. #Repeal0bamacareorbust. "Pass the Pepsid."

From Congressional Budget Office to America. #Federalbudgetdeficit. "It's now about a third of what the Bush administration left for the Obama administration in 2008."

From America to Bush and Obama treasury departments, the Federal Reserve and Democrats in Congress. #Second Great Depression prevented, nearly all bailouts repaid and finance industry regulation strengthened. "Thanks."

Right-wing politicians to right-wing base. #SecondGreatDepressionprevented. "The important thing to remember is that Clinton and liberals caused the recession."

From big banks and Allies in Congress (same address) to President Obama, Democrats, Federal Reserve and America. #Financialindustryreforms. "Boo, hoo."

From big banks to lobbyists and allies in Congress (same address). #Financialindustryreforms. "Get busy on those loopholes, boys."

From working poor to right-wing politicians. #Minimumwage. "Since a low minimum wage creates jobs, as you say, please cut it in half to make it easier to find three jobs instead of the two we now work."

From America to geniuses who blah-blah about Federal Reserve "printing money." #Clarification. "Exactly how much money should we have in circulation today?"

From the Jesus I know to immortal souls of those who would turn away kids at the border. #Heaven. "I came to you frightened, abused and alone, and you turned me away. No problem, dude, I know you're just wired that way. Come on in." (My Jesus is so liberal-minded.)

Quiet Boaters' Motors

I wish to publicly thank the Benton County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol, the Arkansas Game and Fish rangers and the Corps of Engineers rangers for their efforts to protect the environment of Beaver Lake. The great majority of boaters on the lake are respectful of others, but there are still a few selfish, inconsiderate and rude boat operators who daily break the Arkansas Game and Fish regulation regarding unmuffled boats.

Some of these offensive boats, frequently the Cobalt brand, have a muffler bypass device, while others are just designed to be very loud. These were intended for offshore ocean operation, not on a relatively narrow lake such as ours. Sound level readings on shore show that they are up to six times as loud as a regular boat. One in particular even interferes with conversation inside my lakeside house.

There is absolutely no need for this noise, which offends and disturbs humans and wildlife alike, except to satisfy the ego of an immature boat owner. Please continue to cite these lawbreakers until they realize they are unwelcome on Northwest Arkansas' jewel.

Medical Care, Not Jail Time

I am amazed and confused by your handling of coverage of Jo Lynn Jackson's driving while intoxicated arrests (How We See It, Sept. 1). This woman needs mental health care, not jail time.

Casey Jones's statement "she bonds out because she has that nasty presumption of innocence we all have until you're found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt" is reprehensible.

I have no problem with an ankle monitor at all.

She appears to me to be suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome from the first accident and is self-medicating with alcohol and trying to go to jail from feeling guilt. I have been involved in an accident in which a child died more than 10 years ago and understand her pain and guilt. I was found not to be responsible but the feeling of guilt remains to this day.

I thought Fayetteville was a city of compassion. Please, someone, help her.
