Perez' single helps Royals squeeze by Rangers

ROYALS 2, RANGERS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Salvador Perez hit a scorching liner off the glove of third baseman Adrian Beltre for a single, allowing Jarrod Dyson to score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and helping the Kansas City Royals beat the Texas Rangers 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Jason Frasor (4-1) left runners on the corners in the eighth against his former team, and Aaron Crow worked around a two-out single in the ninth for his third save of the season.

All-Star closer Greg Holland was unavailable after pitching three consecutive days.

The Rangers' Derek Holland and counterpart Jeremy Guthrie pitched to a stalemate through seven innings before the Royals broke through against Michael Kirkman (0-1) in the eighth.

The Royals' Nori Aoki and the Rangers' Daniel Robertson drove in the game's other runs.

Holland, making his season debut for the Rangers, looked unhindered by the knee surgery that had kept him out all season. Holland worked around a double in the first and breezed through the middle innings, his only real trouble hardly of his own doing.

Alcides Escobar doubled leading off the third, a fly ball that left fielder Ryan Rua should have tracked down at the wall. Two batters later, Aoki lofted a fly ball to shallow left field that Rua whiffed on with an awkward slide, allowing Kansas City to take a 1-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Guthrie kept dodging trouble until the fifth, when Roughned Odor tripled to start the inning. Robertson drove him in with a groundout to tie the game.

ASTROS 8, ANGELS 3 Jose Altuve had four hits for the second consecutive night, Brad Peacock threw 6 1/3 solid innings and Houston beat visiting Los Angeles. Altuve's home run in the third extended Houston's lead to 4-0 and was his sixth consecutive plate appearance with a hit.

TIGERS 4, INDIANS 2 J.D. Martinez hit a three-run home run off closer Cody Allen in the ninth inning, helping Detroit rally for a victory over host Cleveland. Martinez's one-out shot over the center-field wall bailed out the Tigers, who had been unable to get a clutch hit for eight innings.

RED SOX 9, YANKEES 4 Xander Bogaerts homered among his four hits and fellow rookie Mookie Betts also went deep during a big night at the plate to power visiting Boston past New York.

BLUE JAYS 8, RAYS 2 Jose Reyes hit a three-run home run, R.A. Dickey gave up two hits in seven innings and Toronto beat host Tampa Bay.

WHITE SOX 6, TWINS 3 (10) Tyler Flowers' first career multi-home-run game lifted visiting Chicago to a victory over Minnesota.

CARDINALS 6, PIRATES 4 Adam Wainwright earned his 16th victory and matched his career best with three RBI, carrying host St. Louis to a victory over Pittsburgh. Wainwright (16-9) prevailed despite allowing three home runs to match his career worst. He left after Starling Marte's two-run shot shaved the lead to 5-4 with none out in the seventh. It was the first time he had allowed more than one home run all season.

PHILLIES 4, BRAVES 0 Kyle Kendrick allowed only three hits in seven scoreless innings, Carlos Ruiz homered and drove in two runs, and visiting Philadelphia shut out struggling Atlanta.

METS 8, MARLINS 6 David Wright broke out of his offensive woes with three hits and three RBI and powered New York to a victory over host Miami.

GIANTS 12, ROCKIES 7 Buster Posey homered, doubled twice and drove in four runs, rallying San Francisco past host Colorado. Posey's solo home run in the sixth keyed a three-run burst as the Giants raced back from a 7-1 deficit to remain on the heels of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
