BENTONVILLE — A Pineville, Mo., man was sentenced to 12 years in prison for shooting a woman in the face last year.
Orville Goodwin, 62, pleaded guilty Thursday to attempted capital murder. The plea was reached under an agreement Jay Saxton, chief public defender, reached with Stuart Cearley, chief deputy prosecutor.
Goodwin also was charged with aggravated robbery, but that charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement.
Goodwin was arrested July 16, 2013.
Annette Rapalee, 54, of Jane, Mo., was found a half mile from her home by two men on horseback near Bella Vista on May 11, 2013. Rapalee had been beaten and shot in the face, according to court documents.
She was taken to a Springfield, Mo., hospital. She later was released to a rehabilitation facility.
Rapalee had one gunshot wound to her face and a bruise on her chest consistent with a person’s shoe or boot, according to court documents.
Goodwin and Rapalee were acquaintances, Bella Vista Police Chief Ken Farmer said.
A neighbor told police she last saw Rapalee on May 9 after Rapalee received a $500 check from her late husband’s estate. The neighbor told police she believed Goodwin met Rapalee at her home on May 10 to take her to cash the check.
Rapalee did not identify Goodwin as the person who shot her, Cearley said.
Rapalee is mentally incompetent to testify. She is now a ward of Missouri because she is not competent to care for herself, according to Cearley.
Circuit Judge Brad Karren accepted the plea agreement and Goodwin’s guilty plea.
Goodwin was sentenced to 12 years in the Arkansas Department of Correction. He must serve at least three years before he will be eligible for parole. He will have to abide by a suspended sentence agreement for 10 years after his release from prison.
He received 473 days of credit for the time he spent in the Benton County Jail awaiting trial. Goodwin also must pay $1,370 in court costs.
Karren ordered Goodwin not to have any contact with Rapalee.
