School Board Has A Tough Job

I feel for the parents of Bentonville public school students who are being told their child(ren) will be required to attend a different school because of rezoning of attendance areas. No parent wants a child to face disruption or loss of friendships.

However, I feel equally for the school board members. Serving on public boards is often a thankless job. It is even more so when it becomes necessary to rezone school attendance areas.

I commend the board in using an outside firm in determining the new zones. The board rezones only because of population growth and/or the building of a new school building requires it.

While parents have one priority (that of their child), board members have many -- all of the children involved in the reassignment.

Many times the redrawing of lines seems to make little sense, but when all variables are considered, those making the decisions are doing the very best they know how to do for the largest number of students.

I recall a time when students were bused past Old High to take students to then Elm Tree. No one liked it, but it worked. If a parent(s) has a well-thought-out solution that will be beneficial to all the students, I'm sure the board will listen. In the meantime, I encourage all to work together for the entire Bentonville School District student body.
