MALVERN 49,

FOUNTAIN LAKE 24

MALVERN — Junior quarterback Trace Collie threw four touchdown passes and rushed for two more, leading Malvern to a 49-24 victory over Fountain Lake on Friday night in a battle of first-place teams in the 7-4A Conference at Claud Mann Stadium.

“We felt like we could throw it all week,” Malvern Coach Mike Scarbrough said. “They gave us some matchups that we liked, and we got some big, physical receivers. Those guys can get up and catch the ball, and Trace did a wonderful job throwing the football tonight.”

Malvern’s offense was up to the task even with Fountain Lake (5-2-1, 3-2) scoring on two big plays in the second quarter, a 67-yard Parker Ross run and a 63-yard catch-and-run by J.T. McCoy to cut the deficit to 21-17.

But Collie carried for a 3-yard touchdown on the second play of the quarter for a 14-3 lead, threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Devin Bradford three plays after the Ross run and completed a 44-yard touchdown pass to Bradford six plays after McCoy’s score, giving the Leopards (6-2, 4-1) a 28-17 lead.

“Defensively, we didn’t play very well tonight,” Fountain Lake Coach Tommy Gilleran said. “We gave up four big pass plays, and you can’t do that and expect to win the game. We haven’t done that all year, and tonight, we did it.”

The teams combined for 35 points in the first 4:19 of the second quarter.

Malvern had one more touchdown in it before halftime, Collie scored on a 7-yard run with 37 seconds left after Amari Reed set up the drive with a 57-yard punt return into Fountain Lake territory.

Collie extended the lead to 42-17 on a 38-yard touchdown pass to Keidric Dickens to cap Malvern’s first second-half possession. Collie finished 22 of 30 for 335 yards. He was intercepted once, by Ross.

Devin Shaw gave the ball right back to Malvern with an interception on the next official play from scrimmage, leaving Fountain Lake reeling. Ross later blocked a punt, but the Leopards got the stop on downs on the first play of the fourth.
