Cougars hang on behind Warren

HELENA-W. HELENA CENTRAL 26, STUTTGART 7

STUTTGART -- A pass-interference penalty on Stuttgart and two fourth-quarter interceptions by Helena-West Helena Central's Drekerrious Warren enabled the Cougars to break open a tight game late for a 26-7 victory.

Helena-West Helena (5-3, 4-1 2-4A) had a fourth and 3 at the Stuttgart 10-yard line and a 12-7 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter. A pass-interference penalty in the back of the end zone gave Helena a first down. Keith Hays scored on a 2-yard run two plays later. Keon Demps ran in the two-point conversion to give the Cougars a 20-7 lead with 9:20 left.

The Ricebirds (4-4, 3-2) took 11 plays to drive into Cougars territory but Warren got his first interception and returned it to the Stuttgart 37. Demps scored on a 6-yard run five plays later with 4:10 left to seal the victory.

The Cougars' Edward McGehee opened the game on a 72-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Stuttgart scored late in the first quarter on a three-play, 80-yard drive. Carter Ward threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Lavonte Kelly for its lone score. Hunter Coffield's point after put the Ricebirds ahead 7-6.

The Cougars got their offense going with a 4-play, 62-yard drive late in the second quarter. Malik Arnett scored on a 6-yard run with 17 seconds left, but the try for two failed as the Cougars led 12-7 at halftime.

LONOKE 32, CENTRAL ARK. CHRISTIAN 21

Savonte Rountree ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Lonoke (3-5, 2-3 2-4A) past Central Arkansas Christian (5-3, 3-2). Rountree hit Logan Dozier for a 20-yard touchdown in the first quarter then scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Justin Meadows added touchdown runs of 77 and 70 yards for the Jackrabbits. Braylon Harris had two rushing touchdowns for CAC, which also got a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Zac Lilly.

NEWPORT 26, RIVERVIEW 16

NEWPORT — Gunner Ballard completed 20 of 27 passes for 243 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 1 score to help lead Newport (6-2, 4-1) past Riverview (2-6, 1-4) in an 2-4A Conference game.

Carl Turner added 162 yards rushing and 1 touchdown on 27 carries for the Greyhounds.

Riverview led 3-0 on Stephan Puszewski’s 21-yard field goal that came with 8:28 in the first quarter.

Newport scored the next 14 points, the first on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 4:06 left in the first quarter to Mc-Cabe Cordell, who finished the game with seven receptions for 72 yards.

Turner ran 1 yard for the second score with 11:25 left in the second quarter. Ten seconds later, the Raiders responded when Bennie Watson returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-10 going into halftime. The Greyhounds put away the game with touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. Ballard ran in from 1 yard out in the third and threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Deandre Elston with 11:04 left in the fourth.

David Lee scored on a 7-yard run for Riverview for the final margin.
