2 jailed in holdup of Simmons Bank

Little Rock police responded to a robbery in progress Thursday at the Simmons Bank branch at 7401 Cantrell Road.

Police arrested Precious Canady, 28, of 6900 Cantrell Road, and Mikala Vanderbilt, 19, of 14 Red Apple Cove in Little Rock, on one count each of aggravated robbery and one count of theft of property.

According to a statement from police spokesman Lt. Sidney Allen, police responded to the call about 11:50 a.m. Witnesses to the robbery said a black woman wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and ball cap entered the bank and handed a teller a note.

The teller apparently complied with the suspect's demands, and the woman then fled the bank on foot, heading south from the intersection of Cantrell Road and Georgia Avenue, police said.

Officers quickly arrested Canady, according to the statement. Detectives later arrested Vanderbilt after developing her as a separate suspect.

Canady and Vanderbilt were being held Thursday in the Pulaski County jail without bail.

Stolen-car report leads to charges

Police arrested a Jacksonville man Wednesday night after he reported his vehicle stolen, only to later admit he had been driving it during a hit-and-run accident.

Jacksonville police arrested Terry Withers, 50, of 144 Darryl Court on Wednesday. While interviewing Withers, who had reported his car stolen, police discovered an active warrant for him issued by the Jacksonville District Court for failure to appear at an earlier court date. While officers were arresting Withers, he said that the car had not been stolen and that he had been driving it during an earlier hit-and-run accident, according to the police report.

He was being held Thursday in the Pulaski County jail on charges of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, driving with a suspended license, lack of proof of insurance and failure to stop or yield.
