UA panel to focus on vets in college

A panel discussion on issues faced by veterans enrolled in college will be held Thursday evening at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

Matt Randle and Dan Standage, national officers with Student Veterans of America, will be joined by members of the UA chapter of the organization to discuss issues veterans face as they enter campus life.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in Rooms 503 and 504 in the Arkansas Union, with the talk open to the public.

Randle, the national organization’s chief operating officer, served as an Army combat medic in Operation Iraqi Freedom, earning seven medals for his service, according to information released by UA. He later earned a bachelor’s degree and a law degree from the University of Arizona.

Joining Randle from the national organization will be Standage, the group’s director of disability services in education. A Marine veteran, Standage lost his sight while on active duty, later earning a bachelor’s’s degree and then a master’s degree from the University of Arizona.

According to the Arkansas university, about 540 veterans enrolled at UA for the first time as undergraduates from 2009-10 through 2012-13. UA has nearly 22,000 undergraduates attending classes this fall.
