Bearkats get block, move to next round

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Sam Houston State's Michael Wade blocked a field goal attempt in the fourth quarter -- leading to the go-ahead touchdown -- and the Bearkats beat SE Louisiana 21-17 Saturday, advancing in the FCS Playoffs to face Jacksonville State in the second round next Saturday.

Wade blocked Ryan Adams' 46-yard attempt and the Bearkats drove 65 yards for Donavan Williams' second TD of the day, a 5-yard scamper.

Williams had just 34 yards on 14 carries, but scored twice. Jalen Overstreet rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown.

SE Louisiana led 17-14 with 11:11 left on Bryan Bennett's 2-yard TD run. Bennett rushed for two touchdowns and was 17 of 48 for 181 yards passing.

Sam Houston fumbled the opening kickoff, leading to Adams' 25-yard field goal. In the third, the Lions' Devante Scott muffed a punt inside the 5 and two plays later Williams plunged in from the 1 for a short-lived 14-10 lead.

In another FCS Playoff game Saturday involving a Southland Conference team, David Johnson ran for 152 yards and 3 touchdowns, and caught a touchdown, to lead Northern Iowa (9-4) past Stephen F. Austin (8-5) 44-10 to advance to the second round. Northern Iowa, which handed Illinois State (10-1) its only loss, will play the Redbirds in the second round.
