Monticello to have Civil War marker

A Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Marker will be placed in Drew County, adding to the number of counties approved for a marker, the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission announced Wednesday.

The marker will commemorate the Confederate troops recruited in Drew County. Sponsored by the Col. William F. Slemons Chapter 977, United Daughters of the Confederacy, the marker will be at the Drew County Courthouse in Monticello.

The commission's Historical Marker Program works with local partners to tell stories of how the 1861-65 Civil War affected communities in Arkansas.

Drew County becomes the 54th to be approved for a Civil War Sesquicentennial Historical Marker. There have been 94 markers approved. A stated goal of the commission is to have at least one marker in each of the state's 75 counties by the end of the commemoration period in 2015.
