Deputies called to Jeffress' home

CAMDEN -- Ouachita County sheriff's deputies were called to the home of former state Sen. Gene Jeffress on Tuesday over what was initially thought to be a domestic dispute.

Deputies responded to a report that assistance was needed at Jeffress' home because he had entered the residence with a gun and was agitated and acting erratically. Jeffress was armed and going back into the home when law enforcement arrived.

Ouachita County Sheriff David Norwood later said that though law enforcement was called to Jeffress' home and he was taken to the Ouachita County jail, no formal charges have been filed. The Jeffress family feels that the former senator would benefit by receiving help for his emotional challenges, he said.

Norwood said the family called the sheriff's office because they feared that Jeffress might harm himself.

"It turned out that it was nothing criminal," the sheriff explained. "The gun he took into the house was a deer rifle. Because we were called, we did escort him to the office. He was not detained."

He stated that Jeffress has been dealing with recent health issues.
