Girls Basketball: Huntsville Sweeps Rogers High

HUNTSVILLE -- Miranda Campbell is the only Huntsville starter back from last year's Class 5A runner-up team, but it appears the Lady Eagles won't miss a beat this season.

Senior Shelbi McCartney scored a game-high 22 points, and Chandler Sone hit three 3-pointers for nine points as Huntsville defeated Rogers High 48-35 Monday night in Charles Berry Gymnasium.

McCartney hit a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for a 10-point lead, and Huntsville never looked back. Huntsville, which is now competing in Class 4A, hit seven 3-pointers in the game, including six in the first half.

"We shot the ball well, probably better than we normally do," said Huntsville girls basketball coach Charles Berry. "Hopefully, this is a preview of the year. All these kids played a lot last year and got a lot of experience. We shoot the ball better than we did last year. I thought we played well defensively."

Rogers was just 7-of-20 from the free-throw line in the first half, and the Lady Mounties went more than nine minutes between field goals in the second half. Lady Mounties senior Brooke Sagely led Rogers with 12 points.

"We really got exposed and educated tonight," said Rogers coach Preston Early. "We didn't schedule this game to get beat. We scheduled it for the environment and the situations we would get put in. That is a state championship team we played, and we did not handle anything well tonight."

Huntsville led by 10 in the first quarter, but the Lady Mounties cut the lead to 18-14 on a layup by Sagely midway through the second quarter. But Sone hit back-to-back 3-pointers and McCartney put in a missed 3-pointer by Sone as the Lady Eagles built a 26-16 lead.

Rogers again got close late in the first half, but McCartney's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Huntsville a 31-21 lead at halftime.

"That was a gigantic shot," Berry said.

Rogers (1-1) returns to action tonight when it hosts Prairie Grove. The Lady Mounties and Lady Tigers should tip around 6 p.m. Huntsville (2-0) entertains Ozark tonight in a battle between two of the top girls teams in Class 4A.

Rogers senior Libby Ganoung left the game with a knee injury, but Early did not know the extent of the injury.

Jose Aguilar led three Huntsville players in double figures as the Eagles pulled away from the Mounties. Aguilar had 16 points at halftime, and he converted three three-point plays for the Eagles.

Caleb Kirk added 15 points for Huntsville (2-0) while River Gosvener added 13 points. Huntsville outrebounded the Mounties 49-31, and the Eagles hit 16-of-21 free throws in the fourth quarter.

"That's the best we have played," said Huntsville coach Jim Stafford. "We have three starters back from last year when we played in the 5A. Hopefully, we can compete in the 4A. I thought Jose played real well, and that is the best game of his career. We shot free throws well down the stretch."

Milacio Freeland led Rogers with 18 points while Josh Boaz added 14 points. Rogers cut the Huntsville lead to 46-41 late in the third quarter on back-to-back 3-pointers by Freeland and Boaz, but the Mounties finished the game 18-of-54 from the field.

"We couldn't get over the hump," said Rogers coach Wayne Herren. "We didn't shoot it well from the perimeter, and we didn't shoot it well from the free throw line. Defensively, we have to get the defense shored up. We have to figure out a way to score in the post. Bailey McClure came off the bench and gave us a little bit of a spark."

Rogers hosts Prairie Grove tonight while Huntsville entertains Ozark.
