Chief of Bergman schools faces DWI

A Boone County sheriff's deputy arrested Bergman School District Superintendent Joe Couch on Wednesday night on a charge of driving while intoxicated, Chief Deputy Tim Roberson said.

Couch, 62, declined to comment on his arrest after being reached by phone Thursday.

The deputy stopped Couch on U.S. 65 just south of Harrison after seeing a vehicle weaving in its lane and crossing the centerline, Roberson said. Couch was arrested about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday after failing a sobriety test and after a breath alcohol test showed an estimated a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.14, above the state limit of 0.08, Roberson said.

Couch also was arrested on a charge of driving left of center, Roberson said.

Couch was released at 7:30 a.m. Thursday after posting a $970 cash bond, Roberson said. Couch's first court date is Dec. 4.

Bergman School Board President Bill Sansing said the incident was to be discussed at Thursday's board meeting.
