Shiloh topic

Justin Nolan, professor of anthropology at the University of Arkansas, will discuss local native plants used historically for making food and medicine in a program titled "Pennyroyals, Persimmons, and Pawpaws," at noon Wednesday at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, 118 W. Vaccinations

to be offered

The Washington County Health Unit will provide a flu vaccination clinic for the public from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Jones Center, 922 E. Emma Ave. in Springdale.

Bring an insurance card and driver's license or identification. They will file with the participants insurance for the cost of the shot. Those without insurance will not be charged a fee.

Osher offers

new classes

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Arkansas will offer a Nanotechnology Tour from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Cost is $25 for members or $40 for nonmembers and includes transportation to the Nanotechnology building and catering.

Circle of Life

offers 'hope'

Circle of Life Hospice will offer its annual Hope for the Holidays workshop for individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one, family member or friend. This workshop will be held Thursday at both the Springdale and Bentonville locations. The group will meet at 9:30 a.m., with the workshop from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

seminar topic

The Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center will present:

• "Buying and Selling a Business in Arkansas" -- 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center for Enterprise Development, Walton College, at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

This seminar will provide all the information necessary for a new entrepreneur or an expanding business owner considering buying an existing business in Arkansas and all the matters to consider to sell a small business.

Cost is $40.

• Website in a Day -- 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday. Design a free website using Weebly. Participants be taken step-by-step through creating a free account and creating an attractive, functional, five-page website. Cost is $50.

• "Add Instagram to Your Marketing Plan!" -- 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. This is a fun, hands-on class for business owners interested in using Instagram. Cost is $30.

• "5 Social Media Strategies for Small Business" -- 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fayetteville Public Library. Learn five low-cost ways social media can bolster a current marketing efforts and leave with a social media marketing plan or updated plan to better locate target customers online. Cost is $30.

Library Friends

hosting auction

The Bella Vista Friends of the Library will be holding their annual gift basket silent auction, with bidding ending at 3 p.m. Dec. 13. The three-week-long event features many baskets filled with a variety of gifts.

All proceeds from this auction will be used to provide programs and services at the Bella Vista Public Library at 11 Dickens Place, east of Town Center.

Library hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with hours extended to 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

NWACC hosts

film festival

NorthWest Arkansas Community College hosts its first International Film Festival in conjunction with International Education Week. The college will screen two acclaimed films in Room 108 of the Becky Paneitz Student Center in Bentonville.

The first event begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The International Education Week committee will debut "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia (Bir Zamanlar Anadolu' da)," directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. This critically acclaimed film centers on a group of men searching for a dead body in central Turkey and points toward the human complexity and stubbornness of the truth of the matter. It earned important international accolades, including the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 and the Independent Spirit Award for Best Foreign Film in 2012. The director, Ceylan, won the Palme d'Or this past summer at Cannes for his most recent film.

At 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, the International Education Week committee will showcase the Haitian film "L'Homme sur les Quais (Man by the Shore)." Directed by Raoul Peck, this film explores Haiti under the violent and repressive Papa Doc regime. It was nominated for the Palme d'Or in 1993.

Both film presentations are free and open to the public. Audience members will have an opportunity to participate in a discussion of the film led by NWACC faculty members.
