Gaines leads way for Blue Devils

MOUNTAIN HOME --- West Memphis' Stanley Gaines did it all for the Blue Devils in as 41-19 victory over Mountain Home on Friday night.

Gaines rushed for three touchdowns, a two-point conversion and 226 yards. On defense, he sacked Mountain Home quarterback Zane Walker for a safety and he returned an interception 68 yards.

"I'd like to have a player like Stanley on my team for the rest of my career," West Memphis Coach Billy Elmore said. "He's a winner and he always comes prepared. He also seems to have the knack for making big plays."

Gaines scored touchdowns from 55, 57 and 31 yards, the last of which sealed the game for West Memphis (3-7, 2-5 7A/6A-East). He rushed for 152 of his yards in the second half.

He stepped in front of a Walker pass at the Blue Devil 30 and returned it 68 yards with just over two minutes remaining.

Gaines' sack of Walker for a safety came just seconds before teammate Quintavious Coleman scored a 7-yard touchdown to give the Blue Devils a 21-7 lead at halftime.

West Memphis also got 92 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Martavous Thomas, including a 71-yarder early in the fourth quarter.

Walker, who completed 13 of 20 passes for 222 yards, connected with teammate Drew Strope for an 80-yard touchdown pass off a fake punt. That cut West Memphis' lead to 29-19.

Gaines, however, answered with a 57-yard touchdown run to give the Blue Devils some breathing room.
