Hit on street, mom, two kids in hospital

A woman was critically injured and two of her children were hospitalized after they were hit by a vehicle while walking Thursday night in the 300 block of East Broadway, according to North Little Rock police.

The pedestrians were struck a little after 7 p.m., said North Little Rock Police Department spokesman Brian Dedrick.

The two children were taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Dedrick said. Their mother was taken to UAMS Medical Center in Little Rock with critical injuries, he said.

Dedrick said police don't believe there were an intoxicants involved in the accident.

No further information was available late Thursday.

Cellphone handoff ends in one arrest

According to Little Rock police, a man reached for a BB gun as he talked with a plainclothes detective Thursday regarding a stolen cellphone, and now faces a charge of aggravated robbery.

Antonyo Hampton, 20, reached for a gun in his waistband, which was discovered to be a BB gun, while meeting a Little Rock detective about 12:45 p.m. at a Subway restaurant, the location of which was unclear, the report states.

Hampton had agreed to meet the detective, who was not in uniform and did not identify himself as a police officer, to return a stolen cellphone in exchange for a $20 reward, the report states.

When the detective asked Hampton for the cellphone, Hampton asked for the money and reached for the gun, according to the report. The detective then placed Hampton in custody.

Hampton is charged with aggravated robbery and possession of marijuana. He was being held at the Pulaski County jail late Thursday.

2 step up, say man brandished weapon

North Little Rock police arrested a man Wednesday over accusations he robbed one woman and pointed a gun at another.

Officers responded to the Americas Best Value Inn at 3100 Main St. at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after a call about a robbery. The suspect, Meco Howard, 26, had a large handgun, according to the police report.

At the scene, Rachel Hardy and Tonisha Bassett approached officers, saying Howard had attempted to rob Hardy and aimed the gun at Bassett when she tried to intervene.

Howard was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated robbery. He was taken to the Pulaski County jail where he was being held in lieu of a $2,500 bond as of late Thursday.

VA officers report threats at hospital

A homeless man was arrested Thursday over accusations he threatened to kill Veterans Affairs police.

Gary Smith, 58, was on a 72-hour medical hold at the Eugene J. Towbin Healthcare Center at 2200 Fort Roots Drive in North Little Rock when VA officers attempted to move him to a different ward, according to an arrest report by the VA officers.

Smith reportedly did not comply, saying, "As soon as I get free, I will kill the first person I see." After officers attempted to reason with Smith, he said, "I will find a pen and stab it in the head ... I promise everyone I will kill someone here as soon as I get the chance," according to the report.

Smith was restrained on a bed by straps, the report says. He was charged with three counts of second-degree terroristic threatening and taken to the Pulaski County jail, where he was being held late Thursday.
