Gentry woman pleads guilty to killing husband

A Gentry woman was sentenced to 40 years in prison for shooting her sleeping husband to death.

Susan Fleck, 33, pleaded guilty Monday to murder in the first degree, a Class Y felony, which is punishable with a prison sentence ranging from 10 to 40 years or life imprisonment.

She was originally charged with capital murder, but prosecutors amended the offense and filed the first degree murder against Fleck.

Fleck's attorney Jay Saxton reached the plea agreemment with prosecutors.

Carrie Dobbs, deputy prosecutor, told Circuit Judge Roobin Green that Fleck entered her estranged husband's bedroom and shot him in the head while he was sleeping. The couple's four children were in the home, Dobbs said.

Evan Fleck was found shot in his bed after Gentry police went to the home after a 911 call at 4 a.m. March 3, 2013. Police found the couple's children in the basement, according to court documents.

Susan Fleck called Benton County Central Communications from Delaware County, Okla. She told a dispatcher her husband was in the bedroom, according to court documents.

Deputies with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office found a green and black Springfield .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol with several rounds still in the magazine after they found Susan Fleck at Twisters, a convenience store in Kansas, Okla., according to court documents.

Circuit Judge Robin Green accepted the plea agreement and Fleck's guilty plea.

Susan Fleck was sentenced to 40 years in the Arkansas Department of Correction. She will have to serve 28 years in prison before she is eligible for parole.

Rick Fleck, who is Evan Fleck's father, read a statement and described how his son's murder had impacted their family and especially his four grandchildren.

The children now live in Colorado with their grandparents.

Susan Fleck tearfully read a statement and apologized for her actions. "I am so sorry I did not seek the help that Evan wanted me to get for my depression," Susan Fleck said. "I was so sad and so hurt. I was desperate to bring my family back together. I will forever live in the past wishing I would go back and change that one moment."

Susan Fleck was ordered not to have any contact with her children and her husband's family.

Evan Fleck , 44, filed for divorce Feb. 19, 2013 according to court documents. The couple had been married since July 13, 1997 and had four children.
