2 vie for GOP nomination in Saline County judge race

Two seasoned Republican politicians are vying to be the next Saline County judge.

Kerry Murphy, 46, a Benton alderman, is running against Haskell Mayor Jeff Arey, 51, for the county judge position. The current county judge, Lanny Fite, who has held the office for 16 years, filed to represent the state's 23rd House District. Fite is unopposed.

Murphy is serving in his fourth year as a Benton alderman and has served as chairman of municipal committees, including those for animal control and drainage. Arey is in his 16th year as the mayor of Haskell and his fourth year as chairman of the Saline County Regional Solid Waste Management District. He also serves as president of the Metroplan board.

The winner of this race will run against Shawn Hipskind, a Libertarian, in the November general election.
