Driver safety

taught Monday

The AARP Driver Safety Class will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the Fayetteville Senior Activity and Wellness Center, 945 S. College Ave. in Fayetteville.

Designed for drivers older than 55, there are no tests, but participants receive an automobile insurance discount for three years. Cost is $20 or $15 for AARP members.

Bentonville library

seeks volunteers

Summer is a great time to volunteer, and Bentonville Public Library is looking for great volunteers.

Teens can join the teen volunteer program, during which they can assist with the summer reading club, setup and cleanup of children's programs, craft preparation, shelving materials and other special projects.

Teen volunteers have the opportunity to apply for positions on the Teen Advisory Board along with being eligible to apply for the Friends of the Bentonville Library and Bentonville Library Foundation Scholarships.

Teen volunteer summer training takes place at 4:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday. Volunteers need to attend only one session. Teens who are interested in volunteering can get a head start by attending one of these hourlong training sessions.

To apply to be a volunteer, go to www.bentonvillelibrary.org/volunteer and complete the online application. Upon receipt of a complete application, library staff will make contact to discuss volunteer opportunities and schedule an appointment. The deadline to apply is Monday.

Color Dash

set May 26

A Color Dash -- "Fort Smith's brightest 5k run/walk" -- is scheduled for May 26. As participants run or walk the course, volunteers will splash them with special colorful dust. The result is a white T-shirted community of do-gooders turned into a rainbow of colorful faces.

All proceeds from the the Color Dash: Fort Smith will go to the Arkansas/Oklahoma Regional Education and Promotion Association, a scholarship fund for high school seniors that are pursuing education and a career in agriculture.

Small business

events slated

In partnership with the University of Arkansas Global Campus, Rogers, Small Business Start-Up Summit seminars, presented by the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center at Walton College, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at the UA Global Campus in Rogers, 3300 Market St. The seminars will provide the information needed to make those first steps toward approaching a lender, opening a small business or growing a current small business to the next level.

Resource Center

meets funders

The Nonprofit Resource Center event "Meet the Funders" is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 18 at the Fayetteville Public Library in the Walker Community Room, 401 W. Mountain St.

Representatives from local foundations Arkansas Arts Council, Arkansas Community Foundation, Arkansas Humanities Council, Endeavor Foundation, Tyson Foods Foundation, Walmart Foundation and Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation will discuss giving trends and grant proposal/administration dos and don'ts. Fay Jones School

schedules camps

The Fay Jones School of Architecture is hosting its fourth summer Design Camp, but this year it will be offered to more ages of students and in two locations in the state.

The first four-day camp will be held from June 16-19 in Vol Walker Hall on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville. The second camp will be from June 23-26 at Garvan Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs. Concurrent camps will be held at each location for students going into ninth grade and for students going into grades 10 through 12.

The camps will offer hands-on projects, tours, movies and discussions led by architecture, landscape architecture and interior design faculty members from the Fay Jones School. Camp participants will learn about the basic design disciplines of architecture, landscape architecture and interior design, and about the career paths for these disciplines. Faculty instructors will discuss the differences and similarities of the disciplines and describe how designers in each distinct field work together in professional practice.

Supplies for the activities, as well as lunches, will be provided to the students. The cost for each camp is $300 for registration by Friday. A limited number of need-based scholarships are available.

Retail Connection

First Thursday Retail Connection meeting is held at 5:30 p.m. each first Thursday of the month at South Walton Suites in Bentonville. The group is comprised primarily of Walmart suppliers, associates or otherwise involved with the vendor community and retail. Visitors are welcome at this free monthly meeting.

Free concert

set Wednesday

A free Armed Forces Day concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riordan Hall in Bella Vista to pay tribute to the men and women who serve in the military.

Patriotic songs by the 60-member Singing Men of Arkansas and music by the 17-piece JM Band will be performed.

This two-hour community event is presented by Veterans Council of Northwest Arkansas, the JM Band, Singing Men of Arkansas and the Bella Vista Village Property Owners Association.

The class is open to anyone interested in learning more about the home-buying process and features professionals from the real estate, insurance and lending industries to explain the requirements and answer questions.

Teen workshop

looks at emotions

Too Many Emotions!, a fun, interactive workshop where teens will participate in activities and watch video clips to learn more about their growing emotions, will be presented by Melissa Zielinksi, M.A., doctoral student in the clinical psychology program at the University of Arkansas.

Teens will learn how to use or change emotions and a way to respond to others' emotions. Participants will also have a chance to make a fun snack to take home.

The workshop is for teens in grades seven through 12 and will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Rotary Conference Room. Registration is open on Bentonville Public Library website.
