Mets flex their muscle in Bronx, complete sweep

Wednesday, May 14, 2014

NEW YORK — Curtis Granderson and Daniel Murphy each hit a three-run home run and the New York Mets roughed up fill-in starter Vidal Nuno to beat the Yankees 12-7 Tuesday night for a two-game sweep in the Bronx.

Granderson connected for the second consecutive game in his old ballpark, helping the Mets jump out to a quick lead after they used four home runs to rally for a 9-7 victory the previous night.

David Wright had three hits and two RBI, and Daisuke Matsuzaka (1-0) pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief of a wild Zack Wheeler as the Mets took their sixth consecutive victory against their crosstown rivals, including a 4-0 mark last year.

Eric Young Jr. scored three runs without a hit, and the Mets won their third in a row overall to return to .500 after losing eight of nine. The banged-up Yankees learned right fielder Carlos Beltran has a bone spur in his right elbow that might require surgery, then lost their fourth in a row to drop to .500 for the first time since April 12.

The Subway Series shifts to Queens for the final two games, and Mets fans have several reasons to be excited. Pitching prospect Rafael Montero will make his major-league debut tonight against high-priced Yankees rookie Masahiro Tanaka.

ANGELS 4, PHILLIES 3 Luis Jimenez hit a tie-breaking two-run double in the sixth inning, Matt Shoemaker tossed five effective innings and visiting Los Angeles beat Philadelphia. Shoemaker (1-1) allowed two runs and three hits to beat Cliff Lee (Benton, Arkansas Razorbacks).

ROYALS 5, ROCKIES 1 James Shields cooled down hot-hitting Colorado over seven sharp innings, Lorenzo Cain and Salvador Perez homered, and host Kansas City topped Colorado.

ASTROS 8, RANGERS 0 Dallas Keuchel (Arkansas Razorbacks) pitched a seven-hitter for his first major-league shutout, leading Houston past visiting Texas. Keuchel (4-2) struck out seven without a walk.

PADRES 2, REDS 1 Chase Headley homered in the ninth inning off Aroldis Chapman, the first hit the hard-throwing left-hander allowed since his return from being hit in the head by a line drive, and San Diego beat host Cincinnati.

BREWERS 5, PIRATES 2 Jonathan Lucroy hit a bases-loaded, two-run single and battered Milwaukee withstood the early exits of star outfielders Carlos Gomez and Ryan Braun to beat visiting Pittsburgh.
