Deadly mall gunfire probed

Fort Smith police continued Monday to investigate a Saturday night shootout in which one man was killed and another was wounded.

Three men, two of whom had licenses to carried concealed weapons, were involved in the shootout that occurred in the Central Mall parking lot about 7:40 p.m., according to a police news release.

The release said Fadi Qandil, 34, of Fort Smith was pronounced dead at the scene with multiple gunshot wounds. Grayson Herrera, 23, was wounded and transported to a Fort Smith hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

According to the news release by police Cpl. Patricia Sullivan, Herrera and Dustin O'Connor, 27, had met up with Qandil's estranged wife, Tabitha Qandil, in the mall parking lot and were about to go into a theater to watch a movie.

Fadi Qandil approached the three, Sullivan said, got their attention and lifted his shirt to reveal a handgun in his waistband. He pulled the gun out of his waistband, and Herrera and O'Connor, who are licensed to carry concealed weapons, pulled their guns out, the release stated.

The three exchanged gunfire, with Fadi Qandil being struck multiple times and Herrera once. O'Connor and Tabitha Qandil were not injured, the release stated.

Two off-duty police officers were nearby, Sullivan said. One was working security at one of the theaters and the other had arrived to go to a movie. Both heard the shots, ran to the scene and secured the area, she said.

No arrests have been made in the shooting, Sullivan said. The investigation was ongoing Monday, and the investigators' reports will be presented to the Sebastian County prosecuting attorney's office for possible filing of charges.
