Football: Springdale Has Questions To Answer In Spring

Monday, May 12, 2014

SPRINGDALE -- The offensive huddle won't look nearly the same when Springdale High rising junior quarterback Fuller Chandler steps into it on the first day of spring practice today.

Gone are electric all-state running back Deandre Murray, Central Arkansas tight end signee Josiah Wymer, two top offensive linemen and the top three receivers. This spring will be filled with new faces in important roles as the Bulldogs try to replace seven starters on offense and another six on defense, many of them key playmakers on a 5-5 team.

"We do have some questions," Springdale coach Shane Patrick said. "And spring and team camp and fall camp, we'll figure some of those things out. Even though we lost a lot of big-name guys, we feel like we've got enough guys coming back and coming in."

Chandler is one of the players coming back who will have to shoulder more responsibility this year.

He will enter his second spring practice at Springdale firmly entrenched as the starter after showing flashes of potential while throwing for 1,110 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions as a rare sophomore starter in the 7A-West last year.

His transition from junior high to varsity was aided by having a a home-run threat at running back like Murray, who rushed for 1,537 yards and 16 touchdowns while averaging 8.4 yards per carry last season. But Chandler will have a bigger role entering his junior season.

"We're going to alter a few things that we're doing offensively," Patrick said. "And some of it's to take advantage of some of his stuff. But some of it's just to kind of move away from what we were doing with Deandre. A guy like him, we were designing our offense to make sure he touched the ball. ... Now we feel like we'll be a little more balanced on who gets the ball and make people defend the whole field on every play."

Perhaps the biggest question mark entering the spring is who will step up to try and fill the void Murray left at running back.

"Our running back position is kind of up in the air right now," Patrick said. "We all anticipate that it'll be a running back by committee."

Whoever gets carries will run behind a line that returns four players with starting experience. Talented rising senior Braxton Bradley transferred to Fayetteville and Edwin Espinoza graduated, but Adam Thompson, Daniel Salas, Jose Ambriz and Kaleb Wade all started in 2013.

"We feel like we've got seven guys that give us an opportunity to be pretty good on the offensive line," Patrick said. "Now, we won't be the biggest by any stretch of the imagination, but most of those guys did get playing experience and had pretty good years last year."

There are plenty of questions on defense, too. The Bulldogs graduated their three leading tacklers in dynamic safety Cua Rose (95 tackles), middle linebacker Neal Parsons (85) and outside linebacker Cristian Tejada (71), along with three other solid starters.

Springdale will practice in pads on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday with a day without pads on Wednesday for the first two weeks before wrapping up spring practice May 29.
