Abundant Life, Dixon handle Hazen

PALESTINE --Michael Dixon pitched Abundant Life to a 4-2 victory over Hazen in the first round of the Class 2A East Region on Friday afternoon.

Dixon, who overcame some early struggles, finished with 10 strikeouts as the Owls, a No. 4 seed entering the regionals, qualified for next week's state tournament.

Abundant Life used four hits in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Hazen cut that lead in half on Chris Rollins' RBI single in the Hornets' half of the first.

Dixon settled down and retired eight consecutive Hazen batters from the second to fourth innings.

Zach Dale suffered the loss for Hazen.

CARLISLE 2, MAGNET COVE 0

Magnet Cove's Conner Wells threw seven innings of no-hit ball that included 16 strikeouts, but 4 walks and 2 errors did him in.

Carlisle's Josh Mathis was nearly as effective, allowing two hits while striking out 10.

Carlisle's Chance Richards led off the third inning with a walk and came around to score on a sacrifice fly. The Bison added an insurance run in top of the seventh when Jaden Daniels walked and scored on a wild pitch.

PALESTINE-WHEATLEY 5, MOUNT IDA 3

The host school jumped on Mount Ida early, scoring four runs over the first three innings before holding on for the victory and clinch a spot in the state tournament.

Jarrett Westmoreland received the victory for Palestine-Wheatley after pitching five innings and allowing three runs, while London Abernathy was saddled with the loss. Jacob Jumper picked up the save for the Patriots after pitching two innings of hitless relief.
