Six Northwest Arkansas Students Recognized As National Merit Scholarship Winners

Six Northwest Arkansas high school seniors are among 2,500 winners of $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corp.

They are Deanna Madeleine Corbell and Spencer M. Finney, Fayetteville High School; James S. Underwood, Haas Hall Academy; Alex R. Brown and Oliva C. Paschal, Rogers High School; and Charles MacDougall Nystrom, a home-schooled student from Rogers.

The winners are finalists in the National Merit competition in each state who are considered to have the strongest accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state's percentage of the nation's graduating high school seniors.

Twenty-two students from Arkansas were winners in this round of the scholarship competition.

The winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the students and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the student; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
