Second thoughts

WR Welker shares wealth, for a moment

Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker was a generous winner Saturday at the Kentucky Derby in Louisville, Ky.

Welker handed out $100 bills to members of Marc Blandford’s group while exiting Churchill Downs.

“He said he just won the Kentucky Derby and proceeded to walk down the line until the police officer stopped him,” Blandford told USAToday.

com. “I think six ofus ended up with $100 bills.”

Derby celebrity watcher Jeff Novak tweeted a photo of Welker, who was wearing an orange hat, giving away his winnings, peeling off $100 bills from a large stack he won betting on the sixth race of the day and the Kentucky Derby.

“He just won probably hundreds of thousands of dollars so he just started handing money to people like it was no big thing,” Novak said.

Welker is still looking for his first Super Bowl ring. No big thing.

Lost, then found

Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price went on Twitter on Sunday morning to tweet that he lost his two Labrador retrievers in a suburb of Montreal.

“If anyone finds two labs running around Candiac they’re mine,” Price tweeted.

Canadiens fan John Mastromonaco came to the rescue Monday morning.

Mastromonaco called TSN Radio in Montreal to report he found the Labs, then called the number on the tag to inform Price. He brought the dogs back to Price’s home and Price gave him an autographed stick.

The Canadiens host the Boston Bruins in Game 3 of the NHL Eastern Conference second round today.

Court game

The University of Washington recently unveiled its new basketball court at Alaska Airlines Arena, which features the Seattle skyline silhouetted across the bottom of the court.

Yahoo Sports blogger Jeff Eisenberg said that Washington might have taken a page from the University of Memphis’ court at FedEx Forum, which features the Memphis skyline on the court.

“If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then officials at Memphis received a nice compliment from their counterparts at Washington on Thursday afternoon,” Eisenberg wrote.

“Credit Washington for its choice of courts to copy. If the Huskies were going to draw inspiration from any existing design, better it be the tasteful, subtle Memphis floor than the beach towel-themed floor at Florida International, the fir treeframed court at Oregon or the San Jose State floor featuring five cartoon-like Spartan warriors.”

Seventy-two percent of voters on the Seattle Times website said they liked the new floor. Former Huskies guard C.J. Wilcox said, “The new UW court looks dope !”Hail Mary speed

Manvel (Texas) High junior wide receiver Gary Haynes took the Hail Mary pass to another level this past weekend.

Haynes posted a video to Vine on Sunday of him throwing a 50-yard pass - to himself.

Speed was one thing Haynes wanted to work on during the offseason.

“I’m really working on my speed right now. Like my straightline speed, like track speed,” he told Rivals.com last month. “That’s why I’m running track.”

Haynes, who is unranked among the Class of 2015 prospects by Rivals, had team highs of 52 catches for 876 yards and 13 touchdowns last fall, leading the Mavericks (12-2) to the Texas Class 5A Division II state quarterfinals. He also had two rushing touchdowns, returned kickoffs and played cornerback for Manvel.

Reportedly, Haynes’ only scholarship offer is from Houston, but his top choices are Texas Tech and Texas A&M.

“So, get those offers ready, Kliff Kingsbury and Kevin Sumlin,” Yahoo Sports blogger Ben Rohrbach wrote.
