Amid complaints about the recent legislative session, trustees of the University of Arkansas system approved tuition increases Friday of 9 percent to 18 percent for 1989-90. For instate students, it will mean increases in annual college costs ranging from $120 to $150, depending on the campus. The increase for students at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences will be $325. The increases will be phased in over two semesters, with half taking effect in the fall and the other half in the spring. The 9 percent to 18 percent figures come from comparing total tuition paid by the students in 1988-89 with what they will pay in 1989-90. Similar percentages will affect out-of-state, graduate and law students. However, the increases could be viewed as being 12 percent to 24 percent. The latter is the range of increases when per semester tuition costs this spring are compared with what they will be in the 1990 spring semester.

The Riverdale 10 movie theater at 2600 Cantrell Road in Little Rock will close after its showings tonight, Carmike Cinemas said Wednesday. Gary Krannacker, general manager of theater operations for Carmike, said the closure is because of lack of business and because the company wasn’t happy with the renegotiation of the lease. He said Carmike decided not to renew its lease. But he said Columbus, Ga.-based Carmike will keep open its other theater in Little Rock, the Wynnsong 10. The Wynnsong theater switched to second-run movies last year.
