COLLEGE Winston reinstated

Jameis Winston has been reinstated to Florida State’s baseball team after being suspended following a shoplifting incident, the school confirmed Sunday. The Heisman Trophy winner was issued a civil citation and entered a program that required 20 hours of community service. The two-sport star is the closer on the baseball team and missed the three-game series against Minnesota this weekend. He was issued the citation last Tuesday after he walked out of a supermarket without paying for $32 worth of crab legs and crawfish. Baseball Coach Mike Martin conferred with football Coach Jimbo Fisher and decided to suspend Winston until he completed the community service. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Winston, 20, led Florida State football team to an undefeated season and a national championship. He leads the Seminoles with five saves.

BASEBALL Rays designate Bell

Relief pitcher Heath Bell was cut by the Tampa Bay Rays in a costly move for a normally thrifty team. Needing a fresh long man in the bullpen, the Rays recalled right-hander Nathan Karns from Class AAA Durham and designated Bell for assignment before Sunday’s series finale against the New York Yankees. Bell, a three-time All-Star, was 1-1 with a 7.27 ERA in 13 appearances for the Rays after they acquired the right-hander from Arizona in December as part of a three-team trade that also included Cincinnati. Tampa Bay still owes him about $4.5 million this season. Karns was scheduled to start Sunday for Durham, so he provides protection if the Rays need more than a couple of innings from a reliever. Tampa Bay played a doubleheader Thursday in Boston and a 14-inning game Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

The Atlanta Braves activated right-hander Gavin Floyd from the disabled list Sunday and optioned left-handed reliever Ian Thomas to Class AAA Gwinnett. Floyd signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Braves in December after his 2013 season with the White Sox was shorted by an elbow injury. He had surgery last May to repair the ulnar collateral ligament and a torn flexor muscle in his right elbow. The Braves did not immediately announce Floyd’s role. The 31-year old pitcher has a 70-70 career record with Philadelphia and the White Sox. His best season came in 2008, when he was 17-8 with a 3.84 ERA with Chicago. He hasn’t won more than 12 games or had an ERA under 4.00 since 2008. Thomas was 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA in 10 games.

A viral infection has broken out in the Colorado Rockies clubhouse, sending catcher Wilin Rosario and infielder Josh Rutledge to the 15-day disabled list with high fevers and headaches. To prevent the virus from spreading any further, Manager Walt Weiss is telling his team to wash their hands again and again. Because high-fiving after big hits - such as Charlie Culberson’s home run that won Saturday’s game - could spread the infection. Rosario was placed on the disabled list Sunday in a move that made room to activate right-hander Jhoulys Chacin, who began the season on the DL with a shoulder strain. Chacin was 1-3 with a 5.00 ERA in four rehab starts, two at High-A Modesto and two at Class AAA Colorado Springs. So far this season, Rosario is hitting .239 with 3 home runs and 15 RBI in 24 games. He also recently hurt his hand, but Weiss said that wasn’t a factor in him going on the DL. Rutledge was placed on the disabled list Friday, with the same sort of symptoms as Rosario. Catcher Jordan Pacheco said he’s been taking vitamins, drinking plenty of fluids, getting lots of sleep and repeatedly washing his hands to ward off the possibility of catching the sickness.

The Kansas City Royals activated left-hander Tim Collins from the 15-day disabled list Sunday and optioned right-hander Aaron Brooks to Class AAA Omaha. Collins had been out since April 7 due to a strained left elbow flexor. Collins struck out 10 in four innings in three rehab appearances with Omaha. Brooks made his major league debut Saturday and gave up 6 runs on 7 hits in 2 innings against Detroit.

MOTOR SPORTS IndyCar coming to New Orleans

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal confirmed through a spokesman that he will announce IndyCar’s commitment to bring one of its open-wheel racing events to the New Orleans area in 2015. The race will come to the 2.75-mile road course at the private NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale, about 14 miles southwest of downtown New Orleans. Jindal plans to make the formal announcement at the track today. The $60 million facility opened in 2011. It hosted AMA motorcycle racing in 2012. Developmental levels of open wheel racing have run at the road course as recently as February, when it host the Cooper Tires WinterFest, featuring the Indy Lights, Pro Mazda and USF2000 series. IndyCar, which includes the Indianapolis 500 as its marquee event, is the premier American-based open-wheel racing series.

Qualifier wins in Munich

Slovakian qualifier Martin Klizan defeated top-seeded Fabio Fognini 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the BMW Open final in Munich on Sunday for his second ATP World Tour title. Klizan left center court briefly due to stomach problems in the first set, before he rallied to win in just under 90 minutes. The 24-year-old Slovakian had lost his last three meetings with Fognini but he defeated the 15th-ranked Italian in his only previous final, at St. Petersburg in October 2012. The 111-ranked Klizan defeated defending champion Tommy Haas in Saturday’s semifinals, having already seen off Denis Istomin - who knocked out two-time former champion Philipp Kohlschreiber - and Dudi Sela. Fognini missed out on his seventh title.

Carlos Berlocq stormed back to beat top-seeded Tomas Berdych 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 and win the Portugal Open in Oeria on Sunday for his second career title. The Argentine shook off his poor start to prevail in the two-hour match on outdoor clay by converting seven of his 10 break points. Berlocq, 31, earned a crucial late break in the second set to turn the match in his favor before breaking Berdych four more times to win the decider. Berlocq beat Milos Raonic in Friday’s quarterfinal for his first victory over a top-10 ranked opponent, and two days later he added his second by bettering the sixth-ranked Berdych. Berlocq’s only other career title came last year at Bastad, Sweden.

Maria Sharapova brushed aside Klara Koukalova 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the Madrid Open on Sunday, while Ana Ivanovic beat Madison Keys 6-1, 7-6 (4). Sharapova, who lost to Serena Williams in last year’s final, converted six of eight break points to take advantage of Koukalova’s eight double faults on the Caja Magica clay court. The eighth-seeded Sharapova will play Christina McHale of the United States in the second round. The 11th-seeded Ivanovic ousted Keys to set up a meeting with fellow Serb Bojana Jovanovski. Ivanovic overcame her shaky serve by saving three of four break points.
