Other days

100 YEARS AGO May 2, 1914

“I have no time for parading about in the cause of woman’s suffrage,” says Miss Ouida Bergere of New York City, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.W. Branch, 1501 Rock street, and a young woman who is rapidly forging her way to prominence in the busy world of business. And it developed that this assertion was not intended as an alignment with the anti-suffragists, but was rather the frank expression of Miss Bergere’s attitude. Miss Bergere is on the staff of the Pathe Freres company and is soon to go to Paris, in company with one other American scenario author and two English writers to teach the French writers of the silent drama. She is in Little Rock for a vacation of ten days with her parents.

50 YEARS AGO May 2, 1964 STAMPS - Clerks in Two Sisters Store here will most likely look with suspicion on future customers who might ask for size 28 in men’s summer slacks. The store was burglarized this week and several pairs of slacks were the only items taken. All were size 28.

25 YEARS AGO May 2, 1989 CAMDEN - A small crowd lobbed beer bottles and rocks at officers during a police raid at a Camden nightclub. Camden police took about 40 people into custody Saturday. Camden Detective Sgt. Michael Benson said officers found several violations of state Alcohol Beverage and Control rules at the club, including several minors inside it. Onlookers gathered outside the South Arkansas Social Club at 740 S. Adams Ave. and threw objects at police as club patrons were loaded onto a school bus being used for transportation to the Camden police office, officers said. “The back window in the bus was broken out and one officer was struck with a rock,” Benson said.Police Chief M.J. Paladino said people inside the club, also known as Summer’s Lounge, “were by and large very orderly and caused police little problem.” 10 YEARS AGO May 2, 2004 MURFREESBORO - A Colorado man searching for gems at the Crater of Diamonds State Park has unearthed a 3.1-carat brown diamond, park officials say. Ray Baptista found the honey-colored diamond April 25, and park officials say it is the largest gem found there so far this year. Baptista found the diamond after days of rain at the southwestern Arkansas park. Park Superintendent Tom Stolarz said chances for finding gems are better after storms because rain washes dirt off a diamond’s oily exterior, exposing it.
