Misplaced Priorities At Bentonville School?

On Feb. 28, I attended the Northwest Arkansas Science and Engineering Fair at the University of Arkansas. I did not notice any entries from Bentonville High School. Perhaps there were some that I did not see, however, they did not win an honorable mention let alone place in any of the many categories.

Washington Junior High had some entries and won a couple of awards. Fulbright, the new charter school, won several awards. The city of Alpena, a community with fewer than 500 people, won more than 20.

How can a school of more than 3,500 students not enter one team? Where are the priorities -- sports or education? The jobs of the future are in mathematics and science, not athletics. How many BHS students go on to play Division 1 athletics?

I know, I know: BHS is the state champion in football. That is obviously more important than preparing its students for the future.

Thanks For Great Care

The year 2013 ended with the closing of Dr. John Park's orthopedic practice. This also began the much-deserved days of retirement. Having been a patient of Dr. Coy Kaylor and needing a doctor in late 1970s, I was given Dr. Park's name. My physical therapist and good friend said, "I didn't know Park personally, but I never heard a bad word about him." How true. Dr. Park treated me and performed multiple knee and shoulder surgeries. He has been not only my physician, but also a good friend.

John, thanks for your care and concern from 1978 until Dec. 31, 2013. Happy retirement. You earned it, and you will be missed.
