Junior Lauren Harrell and sophomore Lisa Lauschke have started track season with strong efforts in the 1600-meter run for the Lady Mounties track team.

Harrell ran a personal best 5:30.24 at the Tiger Relays before spring break while Lauschke already has a time of 5:28 this season, Lady Mounties track coach Becky Efurd said. Lauschke did not run track last season after having knee surgery.

“Lauren ran her best mile ever at Bentonville, and Lisa had her best mile the week before,” Efurd said. “Lisa is also a swimmer, and that has allowed her to jump right in there. It’s a really good start of the year for them.”

Efurd said the Lady Mounties will get a boost when freshman Hannah Lueders joins the team for the 7A/6A-West Conference track meet. Lueders will run with the freshmen Lady Mounties through the the junior high regional meet. Lueders is a strong sprinter that will give Rogers depth in the 100 and 200 meter runs.

“She is going to be fantastic sprinter,” Efurd said. “She will do some really good things for our junior high team before we move her up.”

Both Rogers track teams will run in the Whitey Smith Relays Tuesday at the school in hopes of qualifying several teams for the Kansas Relays next month.

GOODSELL EXCELLING IN DISCUS

Springdale High’s Ryann Goodsell will only compete in the shot put in big meets.

The sophomore is focused on qualifying for nationals in the discus, the event she won the Class 7A state championship in as a freshman. She began her sophomore year where she left off, finishing first in the discus at Tiger Relays in Bentonville in convincing fashion despite only practicing for a week after playing basketball this spring.

“Discus is just as much about form as it is power,” Springdale assistant Ronnie Waid said. “So to come straight off the court and compete at such a high level is impressive. The thing I love about her, she is committed to everything she does 100 percent and hates to lose. She might be the most coachable athlete I have ever seen. You can tell her to change something and it's changed the very next attempt.”

STUMBAUGH SHINES IN TEXAS

Payton Stumbaugh placed third and fifth during events at the prestigious Texas Relays in Austin, Texas, over the weekend.

Stumbaugh, an Oklahoma signee, finished third in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.07 seconds and fifth in the 100 in a time of 12.07. This comes off a strong showing in the Tiger Relays at Bentonville, where Stumbaugh placed first in the 100 hurdles, 100, and long jump.

Chris Sandoval competed in the 3,200 steeplechase for Har-Ber but faded badly after a fast start.

“Payton ran fantastic at the Texas Relays,” Har-Ber coach Brett Unger said. “She’s a unique talent who works so hard to improve herself. Those were great times for her.”

Both Stumbaugh and Sandoval gained experience and exposure by competing at the 87th annual meet, which is one of the biggest track and field events in the country.

“It’s a track meet with a football atmosphere,” Unger said. “There were 20,000 people in the stands to watch the high school and college athletes and professionals. Two or three high schools teams from California flew in for the event.”

Har-Ber’s full team will return to action on Tuesday in a track meet at Rogers.

FUTURE BRIGHT FOR LADY WAR EAGLES

Rogers Heritage girls track coach Jeff Shaw has several talented sophomores and a group of good looking freshmen, but he hopes he can just keep them out for track as they get older.

Sophomore Bailey Brya is just one of those that Shaw is excited about. She finished fourth with a time of 51.34 seconds in the 300 hurdles at the Bentonville meet prior to spring break.

“Bailey’s only a second off the school record and she’s come down two seconds in the last two weeks,” Shaw said. “Jennifer Mejia, another sophomore, is not much of a hurdler but she ran 55. She’s fast. Faith Von Gremp is another who broke the school record in the 100. She just has to get stronger.

“She and Bailey are great competitors and it’s exciting to have that. There looks to be some good things for the future and they seem to all like track.”

Senior Hannah Owen finished third in the mile at Bentonville, while Kesley Brown, another strong distance runner, did not compete because of a hip injury.

Junior Joey Saucier, who at first made the decision not to run track this year, is back out and is trying to get healthy, Heritage boys track coach Jay Miles said.

“He has a little bit of a hamstring issue,” Miles said. “He’s slowly working his way back.”

Saucier could see action this week at the Whitey Smith Relay Carnival in Rogers or at a meet in Russellville on Friday.

BUSY WEEK AWAITS LADY TIGERS

Bentonville’s girls will pick up the pace after their shortened spring break with two meets this week.

The Lady Tigers return to action Tuesday with the Whitey Smith Relays Carnival in Rogers, then will travel Friday to Russellville to participate in the prestigious Cyclone Relays, one of the bigger meets of the year.

“It’s going to be a big week,” Bentonville coach Randy Ramaker said. “But it’s going to be good to get back out and back in the groove of things.”

Ramaker expects things to be a little rough this week after no practice sessions during the shortened spring break. He estimated about 70-80 percent of his team being present for classes on Monday and Tuesday, and that allowed to have a regular practice session those two days.

Ramaker doesn’t expect to have a full squad at either meet. However, both meets this week will serve a purpose for something later in the season.

“The relays carnival will serve as a good practice and allow us to run some different things,” Ramaker said. “We have the Kansas Relays on April 19, so the Rogers meet will give us a chance to try some things that we don’t do in normal meets.

“There are some great benefits to running in the Cyclone Relays. It’s a good meet, and one of the great things about it is it gives us a chance to see people like Cabot and North Little Rock — teams we don’t normally see until we get to the state meet — or Bryant, which we will run against during the conference meet.”
