Rhoads’ son takes a shot, nets winner

When you’re the high school aged son of a college football coach and you’re friends with the daughter of the men’s basketball coach, you’re obligated to ask her to prom, right?

That is what Wyatt Rhoads, the son of Iowa State football Coach Paul Rhoads, did. But his potential date, Paige Hoiberg, happens to be in New York City this week. So Rhoads had to get creative.

Hoiberg is there because her dad is Fred Hoiberg, Iowa State’s basketball coach. ISU played Connecticut in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

So to get up the confidence to ask, Rhoads, a junior at Gilbert High School in Gilbert, Iowa, went the song route. He posted a song to YouTube to the tune of “Hey There Delilah” by the Plain White T’s.

Rhoads tweeted Paige Hoiberg the song Thursday night. She then accepted a bit later.

Rhoads told the Des Moines Register the song was chosen because of the opening lyrics and because it was the first song that popped up on Pandora while looking for music on spring break.

He also wrote his own lyrics, but he doesn’t actually play the guitar.

He said he and Hoiberg aren’t dating but are “close friends” and thought it’d be fun to go to prom with her.

Rhoads better sharpen up his dancing skills quickly. Judging from Fred Hoiberg’s text to Paige after beating North Carolina on Sunday, she could have really high dancing standards.

“I just danced in the locker room … I’m guessing I probably embarrassed you…sorry!” the text read.

Good gunga galunga

They say a picture is worth a thousand words.

Photos of actor Bill Murray that hit the Internet on Friday are a testament to that.

Murray was at the 14th annual Murray Bros. Caddyshack Charity Golf Tournament in Florida on Friday. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary until it was noticed that Murray, who played greens keeper Carl Spackler in the 1980 movie Caddyshack, was rocking some Pabst Blue Ribbon golf pants like few others could.

After getting past the pants, the next logical question was what was under the stylish Puma jacket he was wearing.

Murray didn’t disappoint with his nod to one of Spackler’s best lines from the movie. On the T-shirt was a sketch of the Dalai Lama with a golf club behind his neck and shoulders with the words, “Big Hitter.”

Cutting it close

When the Los Angeles Lakers flew to Milwaukee for Thursday’s game against the Bucks, Chris Kaman remained behind for personal reasons before getting on a commercial plane.

“Chris Kaman [personal issue] still hasn’t caught up to the team yet. Supposed to land in MKW any minute now. A true game time decision,”Lakers beat writer Mike Bresnahan of the Los Angeles Times tweeted 90 minutes before tip-off.

He then tweeted more than an hour later: “Chris Kaman has arrived at the arena in Milwaukee.

He might actually start. Tip-off is 10 minutes away.”

Kaman indeed started, scoring 13 points and grabbing four rebounds in Los Angeles’ loss to the Bucks.
