Rogers High 2, Palmer, Colo., 1

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Derek Sallee and Nolan Farnan combined to hold Palmer, Colo., High School to three hits and no earned runs and lead the Rogers High Mountaineers to an eight-inning victory in the first pool game of the All-Star Division of the Coach Bob Invitational Tournament on Monday.

Rogers (5-2) surrendered an unearned run in the second inning, but that was all Palmer could manage against Mountie pitching. Sallee started and went five innings, allowing just three hits and no walks. He struck out three. Farnan relieved him in the sixth and pitched three perfect innings, striking out five of the nine batters he faced.

Rogers, trailing 1-0 entering the top of the sixth, tied the game when they loaded the bases with no outs, and Brett Gentz drove in Timmy Seldomridge with a fielder's choice.

After going down in order in the top of the seventh, Rogers took the lead in the eighth when Seldomridge led off with a triple and scored on Zach Arrick's ground out.

That's all Farnan needed as he retired Palmer in order in the bottom of the inning.

Rogers will play Pinnacle High School of Phoenix at 3:30 p.m. today in the second pool game of the tournament.

Rain Halts Fayetteville-Farmington Invitational

Mena had cleared its way through the top of the winner's bracket and was awaiting an opponent in the Fayetteville-Farmington Invitational finals, when rain forced tournament play to be called off Saturday.

Farmington was one of the teams in a fight out of the consolation bracket hoping to play Mena in the championship. The Lady Cardinals opened the tournament with a 4-2 win over Greenwood on Friday, then defeated Pottsville 8-4 on Saturday, getting a home run and four RBIs from Jordin Smith in the win.

An 11-2 loss to Conway put Farmington (7-3) in an elimination game against Greenbrier, but the game wasn't concluded because of weather.

Fayetteville, the other co-host of the tournament, finished 1-2 on the weekend. The Lady Bulldogs (7-4) opened with a 6-0 loss to Booneville on Friday, then bounced back with a 3-1 win against 7A/6A-West Conference rival Rogers High on Saturday. In the win against the Lady Mounties, Maggie Mabry pitched five innings and allowed just six hits with two strikeouts.

Fayetteville closed the tournament with a 7-2 loss against Booneville, while Rogers bounced back from two losses to open the tournament with a 7-0 win against Cabot in its second game Saturday. Haylee Zimmermann allowed just one hit in four innings in the circle for the Lady Mounties in the win over Cabot, and both Ryan Vaughn and Kylan Hensley had two hits in the game.
