Washington news in brief

WASHINGTON - Members of the Arkansas congressional delegation are to return to Washington on Monday after a week in their districts.

This past Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Rick Crawford attended a groundbreaking for several new airplane hangars at the Batesville Regional Airport. According to his staff, the Republican from Jonesboro also toured the airport’s new wastewater-treatment plant with Batesville Mayor Rick Elumbaugh and toured the community’s new Ozark Mountain Poultry plant.

U.S. Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., spoke to an Arkansas Tech University government class and met with business owners in Russellville. He toured Morrilton’s new 911 call center and spoke to the students at Morrilton High School. He also attended events in Clinton, Conway, Fairfield Bay and Perryville, his staff said.

Republican U.S. Rep.

Steve Womack visited DaVita Dialysis in Fayetteville on Monday for National Kidney Month. On Wednesday, he visited heating and cooling equipment manufacturer Rheem, Woods Elementary School, and Davis Iron and Metal in Fort Smith. On Friday, he visited Mary Mae Jones Elementary School in Bentonville, his staff said.

U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., met with Allen Hamby of the Arkansas Fraternal Order of Police in the senator’s Little Rock office Tuesday, his staff said.

On Monday, Pryor was honored by the Arkansas Find Me 911 Coalition in Little Rock for working with the Federal Communications Commission to make it easier to trace the location of 911 calls made from cellphones.

Clinton fundraising

Former President Bill Clinton will attend $250-a-person fundraisers for two Arkansas congressional candidates early next month.

The fundraiser for James Lee Witt, a Democrat running in the 4th District, will be at the Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs on April 5.

Witt led the Federal Emergency Management Agency during the Clinton administration.

The fundraiser for Patrick Henry Hays, a Democrat running in the 2nd District, will be April 6 at the Argenta Community Theater in North Little Rock.

Ex-diplomat’s visit

Former Israeli diplomatYoram Ettinger is to speak at 6 p.m. today at Agape Church in Little Rock for “A Night to Honor Israel.”

Boozman, U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin, R-Ark., as well as members of the Arkansas Legislature, and statewide and federal candidates are to attend, according to a news release.

Agape Church is at 701 Napa Valley Drive.

Lincoln lobbying

The firm of former U.S.

Sen. Blanche Lincoln, a Democrat, has been hired by one of the GOP’s top donors to lobby Congress on reinstating a federal policy banning online gambling.

The Lincoln PolicyGroup has registered to lobby for the Las Vegas Sands Corp., which operates hotels and casinos in Nevada, Pennsylvania and overseas.

Billionaire Sheldon Adelson is the company’s chairman and chief executive officer.

Pryor fundraiser

On Wednesday evening, Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn and his wife, Cindy, a political activist, hosted a fundraiser at their California home for Pryor and U.S. Sen.

Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

Contribution levels to the event started at $2,000 per person and went to a maximum of $10,400, with money going to a jointfund for their campaigns, according to Variety.

Pryor campaign spokesman Amy Schlesing said she did not know whetherthe senator attended the fundraiser and that a person who would know, campaign manager Erik Dorey, could not be reached.

According to the article, several gun-control advocacy groups asked Horn to cancel the event because Pryor and Begich both voted against legislation that would have required increased background checks for certain gun purchases.
