Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area near Rogers will host an event on Sanborn fire insurance maps and fly tying this weekend.

Robert Rousey, curator of education for the Rogers Historical Museum, will lead a program about the maps, which were made from 1867 through 1970. The maps document the rise of American cities in block-by-block detail.

The large-scale plats also contain data used to estimate fire risk for urban structures. Maps were made for more than 12,000 American cities.

The maps are of particular use to historians, genealogists and urban planners. The free talk is set for 2 p.m. today.

Fly-fishing expert Sallyann Brown will host a fly-tying workshop from noon-4 p.m. Sunday at the park.

The workshop will focus on basic tying techniques for all types of flies. Participants will learn how to tie knots, apply weights, hackle and spin deer hair.

Guests can tie their own flies or decorate a fishing hat.

The cost to attend is $35; the class is limited to 15 participants.
