JBU puts away Lyon in second half

Lyon will have to wait at least another year for its first victory in the NAIA women’s national tournament after the Scots were eliminated by John Brown 70-53 on Thursday night in Frankfort, Ky.

Lyon (24-9) has lost in the first round of the tournament three consecutive seasons. JBU (26-7), which had lost in the opening round of the tournament in 2004, 2006 and 2011, advances to play at 8:45 tonight against top-ranked Vanguard (Calif.).

Leading 36-28 at halftime, the Lady Eagles opened the second half with a 10-0 run to jump out to an 18-point lead with 13:41 left. After missing a three-point field goal to begin the second half, Lyon turned over the ball on three consecutive possessions. JBU turned two of those into points for a 41-28 lead.

A three-pointer by Lauren Rogers gave the Lady Eagles their largest lead, 52-33, with 11:15 left. The Scots pulled to within 58-46 after Taylor Gaedtke’s basket off an offensive rebound with 6:29 left, but JBU outscored Lyon 12-7 the remainder of the way.

JBU, which leads the NAIA in three-point field goals made, was 9 of 20 (45 percent)against the Scots. Rogers, who stepped into the starting lineup late in the season when Eliana Fernandez was lost with a season-ending injury, was 5 of 6 from behind the three point line and finished with 19 points.

JBU was led by Kortni Barenberg, who had 21 points and seven rebounds. All-American Sierra Shipley was 5 of 15 from the field and finished with 11 points, and Brooke Barker added 10 points.

The Lady Scots shot 39.7 percent (23 of 58) from the field, including 24 percent (6 of 25) from behind the three-point line. They were led by Carina Jackson and Elliot Taylor, who had 15 points each. Taylor, a freshman from Cabot, was 7 of 8 from the field.

Philander Smith loses

William Carey (Miss.) led from start to finish Wednesday night and eliminated Philander Smith 109-92 in the first round of the men’s national championship in Kansas City, Mo.

The teams didn’t tip off until about 11:15 p.m., and the Crusaders (28-2) responded better to the late start by scoring the first seven points on their way to an 18-6 lead with 15:24 left inthe first half. William Carey forced 14 first-half turnovers and scored 24 points off the Panthers’ miscues to lead 47-31 at halftime.

The Crusaders’ lead grew to as much as 27 points when Guy Payne hit a three-pointer for a 99-72 lead with 3:37 left in the second half. Philander Smith (20-12) trimmed the deficit to 17 twice in the half, the last time on a basket by Braylon Spicer with 1:12 remaining.

William Carey’s Jeremiah Dunnings and Kelvin Nixon led all scorers with 21 points apiece. Daron Bell had 19 and Donovan Walker 11 for the Crusaders.

The Panthers, who shot 31 percent (11 of 35) in the first half, were led by Broderick Brandon’s 16 points and Juvon Demerson’s 15 points and game high 13 rebounds.

Philander Smith also got 13 points from Darrian Kee and 12 each from D’Alvin Brown and Spicer.
