FORT SMITH - While the family of G.L. Gilley slept last night burglars entered their home, prepared and ate a meal, washed it down with a dozen bottles of beer and then sat at the table and smoked several cigarettes. Members of the family did not know that their home had been entered until they arose this morning. On the dining room table they found the remains of the meal, the empty beer bottles and a dozen cigarette stumps.

WASHINGTON - Sen. John L. McClellan charged Thursday that white parents are denied a choice available to Negro parents, who can select either a segregated or integrated school for their children. Since the 1954 Supreme Court decision barring segregation in public school, McClellan said, “Negroes not only have the right to have segregated schools and send their children there, but also have the right to send them to an integrated school. Where is the equity in that position, when we say to the white person ‘I do not care what you want. You must take integration’?” the Arkansas Senator asked. McClellan made this point during an exchange between Sens. Holland of Florida and Cooper of Kentucky who were debating the education section of the Civil Rights Bill.

But, Tyson said, “I didn’t think (the fight) would last quite this long. “It’s a great company. We’ve been competing with Holly Farms for 25 years. We’ve been talking with them (about a possible sale or merger) through the years. Finally we decided we had to be hostile. You don’t grow by being nice,” Tyson said. “This is not a popularity contest.”

Lawyers for the Lake View School District on Friday compared themselves and the district to soldiers returning home to an ungrateful citizenry. In papers filed with the Arkansas Supreme Court, the Lake View district pleaded for the court to reverse a new state law that would force the district to consolidate with another. Another filing, on behalf of Gov. Mike Huckabee, argued that Lake View’s call for more state money is enough evidence to justify the district’s consolidation.
