Weekend Activities Set At Hobbs State Park Near Rogers

— Special events are scheduled this weekend at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area.

Robert Rousey, curator of education for the Rogers Historical Museum, will speak Saturday about the 1896 Sanborn maps of Rogers created by Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, according to a news release.

Sanborn maps were made for more than 12,000 American cities, and included large-scale plats containing data used to estimate potential fire risk for urban structures. The Rogers maps were in 1896, 1901, 1908, 1914 and 1923.

Rousey will talk about the maps' color coding, how they represent building material and will address particular buildings on the maps.

The free presentation is set for 2 p.m. Saturday in the Visitor Center, and is part of the Friends of Hobbs Speaker Series programs.

Sallyann Brown, a flyfishing expert, will lead a fly-tying workshop from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Visitor Center.

Subjects covered will include how to tie knots, apply weights and hackle, how to spin deer hair, and tie on dubbing, tails, wings, eyes and legs.

Cost of the workshop is $35 and limited to those 12 and older. Reservations and prepayment are required and may be made by calling 479-789-5000.

The Visitor Center is just east of the intersection of Arkansas 12 and War Eagle Road.
