Bray Leads Rogers High Over Greenwood

ROGERS -- It seems Bryce Bray hasn't missed a beat for Rogers High.

Bray will be an offensive lineman at Harding University in the fall, and the senior didn't play any baseball over the summer or the fall while concentrating on football. But the former Mounties center hit a key solo home run, and he then added an RBI in the fifth inning to help lead Rogers to an 11-1 run-rule victory over Greenwood at the Best Sports Classic on Thursday.

How They Scored

Nelson, Clark (5), Cox (6) and Herrell; Gentz, Treacy (6) and Ivey. W - Gentz, 1-0. L - Nelson. HRs - Rogers, Farnan (1), Bray (1).

Bray's first home run of his high school baseball career gave Rogers a 3-1 lead, and his RBI on a fielder's choice that also kept Greenwood from turning a double play was a spark as the Mounties scored six runs for commanding 9-1 lead. Rogers (2-0) has won both its games on the 10-run rule, and the team finished with 13 hits.

"Bryce is a kid, if we can get him going, can really do some damage in the seven hole," Rogers coach Matt Melson said. "Bryce has a chance to drive in some runs. I thought the big play in the game was him beating out that double play. Lot of hustle out of him. We scored five runs after that and kind of put the game away."

Nolan Farnan gave Rogers a 2-1 lead with a two-run home run in the third inning, and Bray then led off the fourth with a shot over the left field fence. Bray had a bunt single and walked twice in the Mounties win Wednesday against Alma.

"It's actually starting to come together," Bray said. "I just squared it up. It was a 3-1 count, and I was expecting a fastball. It was a fastball right down the middle. This team has some confidence, but we are not where we want to be. We know that."

Sage White was also a spark at the bottom of the lineup as the sophomore was 3-for-4 with three RBIs. White hit a two-run single in the six-run fifth, and he scored a run on another single as Rogers ended the game early in the sixth. Carter Forbis was also 3-for-4 while Arkansas State signee Timmy Seldomridge was 2-for-5 with three RBIs.

"Sage is capable of giving us a lift in the nine hole," Melson said.

Brett Gentz picked up the win after striking out seven and scattering five hits in five innings of work

"Brett did a good job," Melson said. "He threw too many pitches early, and he knows it."

The Mounties conclude the Best Sports Classic against Conway at 4:30 p.m. today in Veterans Park.

BENTONVILLE 11, CONWAY 1

Sophomore Kasey Ford dominated Conway, allowing just one run over five innings as the Tigers kept their record perfect with a run-rule victory.

Ford (2-0) struck out three and scattered five hits as the Tigers (3-0) secured the win with a seven-run fifth inning.

Paul Rouse had a pair of RBIs for the Tigers, and Kane Koenigseder added a two-run single. Will Jibas and Troy Cahill each tripled for the Tigers in the win.
