"I know a lot of you are here for the Lake Atalanta discussion, but that's not going to happen tonight," Mayor Greg Hines told the packed City Council chamber.

"This is not the meeting where you address the council about your wishes on the road, that will come later," he said.

Two public notices must be posted before aldermen can decide the road issue, according to a city ordinance.

"We have the time to post the notices within the next two weeks. So the only thing we are voting on tonight is when the public forum will be held. I suggest we hold it at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, the date of next council meeting," Hines said.

Although the meeting is to discuss vacating the right of way it doesn't mean the decision has been made, Hines said.

"The decision to close the road will be made after the public hearing. Aldermen can vote to keep the road open if that's what they want," he said.

There was no discussion from the aldermen, nor did any audience member say anything about the lake road issue.

The vote to set the public hearing was unanimous.

City officials have hosted two public meetings on the road in the past month. There were about 20 people at the first meeting and about 40 at the second meeting. The majority of those attending was in favor of keeping the road open.
