Gov. Faubus today called a special session of the legislature for noon Tuesday, March 24, to deal with voter registration and said he was endorsing the bill adopted by the Arkansas Legislative Council. The council measure provides for an annual registration system. There has been a hard push in some quarters for a permanent system and Rep. Hardy W. Croxton of Benton County is expecting to introduce a permanent system bill when the session convenes. Undecided in that bill was the question of the registrar, whether it should be the county assessor, sheriff-collector or the clerk.

The county jail system in Arkansas is in good condition, despite the advanced ages of several facilities, the state Criminal Detention Facilities Review Commission coordinator said. “We’ve got a lot of building going on and I think we’re on the right track on getting everything in compliance,” coordinator Mike Grady said in a recent interview. “About half of them (county jails) are in real good shape,” he said. Many county jails were built decades ago on the top floors of courthouses, limiting options in any expansion projects. The need for more space is pressing in some areas because of large population increases and a constant backlog of prisoners awaiting transfer to state Department of Correction prisons.

Just a few months ago, the rallying cry for Wesley Clark’s presidential campaign was “Go, Wes, Go.” Now, it’s “Everything must go.” Remnants of the retired general’s thwarted presidential aspirations will go on the auction block this morning in downtown Little Rock. The auction is another in a long series of steps to dismantle the Arkansan’s campaign operation. Money raised from the auction will help pay down the debt incurred during Clark’s six month campaign. Clark, who launched his campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination in September, bowed out Feb. 11 after losses in the Tennessee and Virginia primaries.
