Fire destroys building in Rogers

An early morning fire destroyed a Rogers building at 2:46 a.m. Wednesday, said Bryan Hinds, deputy chief of the field operations division at the Rogers Fire Department.

Rolling smoke and flames rose from the roof of the building at 2004 S. Eighth St. and spread quickly. About half of the building was on fire before firefighters arrived four minutes after the initial call, Hinds said. Police officers on patrol called in the blaze.

Hinds said Wednesday afternoon officials believed the fire was intentionally set.

"The gusting wind was feeding the flames pretty good by the time we got there," Hinds said.

No one was injured, but the metal building was nearly a total loss, Hinds said. He estimated damages to run about $150,000.

No other structures were damaged in the fire, Hinds said. Firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading to a building that was just one foot away, he said.

The building is owned by Starr-Hickman Investments LLC and Floyd and Kathy Mabry, according to county courthouse records. Starr-Hickman owner Daryl Hickman said the building was leased to Mickey Beagle, who ran a business beside Kent Rylee Automotive Solutions. Hinds said the business appeared to be an auto repair shop. No sign was displayed out front, he said.

Mickey Beagle Auto Sales has a web page on Facebook, an online social networking site, that lists an address of 2006 S. Eighth St., which is also under Starr-Hickman. A message left at the business's phone number was not returned Monday. Beagle did not return a message left on his cell phone Wednesday morning.

At least two cars were inside the building when it burned and were heavily damaged, Hinds said. Hickman said the building was not insured.

The investigation into the cause and origin of the fire was ongoing Wednesday afternoon.
