Siloam Springs Stymied By Little Rock Parkview Defense

— Little Rock Parkview coach Al Flanigan wasn't pleased with the Patriots' man-to-man defense late in the first quarter after Siloam Springs went on a 10-2 run to tie Monday's 6A state quarterfinals game.

"They were tearing our man up," he said.

Siloam Springs (12-15): Goddard 24, Gray 12, Johnson 4, Benson 3, Pierce 2, Holroyd 2.

Little Rock Parkview (26-1): Macon 33, Pippins 12, Garland 9, Jaylen Franklin 7, Hendrix 5, Elliott 4, Robinson 4, Walker 3, Javon Franklin 1.

The Patriots coach then switched his defense to a matchup zone, having his best athletes fill the gaps and passing lanes which led to Parkview transition baskets. The result was a 11-0 Parkview run to close the first quarter, and the Patriots went on from there to a 78-47 mercy rule win against the Panthers at Don Riggs Hurricane Gymnasium at Siloam Springs High School.

"They're a tremendously talented team," Siloam Springs head coach Tim Stewart said of Parkview. "They went to a matchup zone that was really tough on us. We didn't handle it well. Our turnovers gave them transition baskets the other way."

The Patriots advance to today's state semifinal game at 5:30 p.m.

It's the second straight season Parkview (26-1) has ended Siloam Springs' season in the 6A quarterfinals and by another hefty margin. Flanigan said the defensive switch was the key.

"We had to change our defense," Flanigan said. "That was the turning point."

Parkview senior guard Daryl Macon had a big say in the outcome as well.

Macon canned three straight 3-pointers to open the second quarter and was fouled on another trey leading to three free throws. Macon grabbed an offensive rebound and scored and later hit his fourth 3-pointer of the quarter to give Parkview a 41-17 lead. Macon wound up with 17 points in the quarter alone.

The Patriots would stretch that lead to as much as 29 points in the first half before Reece Goddard hit a 3-pointer for Siloam Springs (12-15) to pull the Panthers within 48-22 at halftime.

Macon and the Patriots continued the offensive barrage in the third quarter. He hit a 3-pointer to open the quarter and later hit another trey plus a free throw for a rare four-point play that gave Parkview a 59-27 lead. Macon would finish with a game-high 33 points for the Patriots.

"He's got the ability of doing that every night," Flanigan said. "I think he's the best shooter in the state -- bar none."

Parkview's Ryan Pippins added 12 points for the Patriots while Khalil Garland scored nine.

Parkview maintained a 32-point lead going into the fourth quarter, which was played with a running clock.

Despite the lopsided score, the Panthers never quit battling.

Goddard finished the last Siloam Springs game of his career with six 3-pointers and led the Panthers with 24 points.

Senior Dylan Gray, who was banged up on several physical plays earlier in the game, finished with 12 points and hit 8 of 9 from the free-throw line.

"Dylan and Reece and Stephen Holroyd all played their guts out tonight," said head coach Tim Stewart. "They showed the younger kids how to battle to the end. We're going to miss those three seniors."
