Seasonal Offerings

Churches in Northwest Arkansas have planned various events for the Lenten season, which are open to the public and listed below. Lent lasts until Easter Sunday.

Stations of the Cross

Stations of the Cross are a series of artistic representations, often sculptural, depicting Christ carrying the Cross to his crucifixion. The faithful make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer by meditating on the scenes of Christ's sufferings and death. It is often performed in a spirit of reparation for the sufferings and insults that Jesus endured during his Passion.

St. Bernard Catholic Church of Bella Vista, 1 St. Bernard Lane, offers Stations of the Cross, at 4:30 p.m. Friday.

Lent

Lent is a solemn religious observance spent in preparation -- through prayer, repentance of sins, penance, giving and fasting -- of Holy Week, culminating with Easter Sunday, which marks the Resurrection of Jesus.

Many Christians commit to fasting or giving up luxuries, representing the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, where he endured temptation by the devil -- Matthew 4:1-11.
