Numerous complaints have been made to Chief of Police Fred N. Cogswell by street car conductors of boys who ride bicycles while holding on to the cars, it being pointed out that the boys take great risks being struck by other vehicles. Chief Cogswell said yesterday that he would put a stop to this recklessness at once, even if it became necessary to arrest some of the boys and have them fined in Police Court.

Perry County Rep. Paul Van Dalsem may have a female opponent this year. Mrs. Charles Windle of Perryville, chairman of the Perry County Women in Politics, said Saturday that a woman had agreed to run against Van Dalsem but that she was not yet ready to announce. Mrs. Windle’s organization was formed after Van Dalsem was accused of making critical statements about Perry County womanhood. The women’s political organization styles itself as nonpartisan but Mrs. Windle said Van Dalsem’s potential opponent will run on the Republican ticket.

Some Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants are featuring a 32-ounce mug with the Drug Abuse Resistance Education logo on it as a fundraising campaign for local DARE programs. The cup costs 99 cents. Part of the proceeds will benefit the local programs and will be used to buy materials and hire two more police officers to teach Dare to sixth-graders. The officers teach students how to handle peer pressure, gain self-esteem and become more aware of the drug problem.

For more than a month, counterfeit money believed to be computer generated has trickled into restaurants and stores across Pine Bluff, resulting in four arrests and an ongoing investigation. The counterfeit currency went into circulation in mid-January and has been “steady ever since,”said Pine Bluff police Sgt. Gregory Shapiro. Though three arrests were made in January and one in February, fake bills continue to appear in Pine Bluff’s cash registers and wallets. The Police Department has received at least one phony bill per day, Shapiro said. A similar outbreak emerged earlier this week in Clarksdale, Miss., and late last year in Star City and Rogers. The Police Department has collected $500 to $1,500 in bogus cash, mainly in denominations of $10, $20 and $100, Shapiro said.
